Activities on Thassos

Like most holiday places, Thassos has many attractions and things that visitors like to do - included here are just some suggested either by visitors to the island or islanders themselves.

Mountain Biking

On the island there are all types of tracks and they are fully tested and known by the local bikers. There are big cross country tracks from 35 to 90 km. Extreme single tracks from 20 to km, firebreaks and also down hilling for the most daring.

Horse Riding

Pine Tree Paddock is in Rachoni, the mountain village just 3 km from Skala Rachoni, from where you can enjoy guided or unguided horse riding all year round.

The aim is to get even non riders out and into the surrounding paths to ride.

Walking on Thassos

Information from Stuart Miller, Kent, UK - 26 May 2003 (feedback pages)

"We have, for many years, been using a walking guide entitled "Walking on Thassos" by Truus van de Mast and Roos Gruwel. Troos was born in Hilversum, but has lived on Thassos since 1987. Roos is also Dutch and has also lived on the island for the same time. Both are teachers. Roos is a nature guide for the Dutch Nature organisation on Thassos. We bought it at the Thomson office when it was next door to the Votsalo snack bar (several years ago). It may still be available in the Thomson office now in Thassos Town. It has a distinctive green cover with a map of the island and a pair of walking boots on the cover.

The book describes 11 different walks, all of differing difficulty mostly from the areas around Limenas (Thassos Town), Panagia, Potamia and Golden Beach. There is also one from Maries. We used it to find Vathi Beach which is where the Lazy Day cruise stops for its barbeque. It's lovely - especially when it's deserted. Each walk is very well described with photographs, maps and diagrams that are very helpful. It also contains valuable hints and tips and information about nature on Thassos.

Even if you don't like walking, it's a very handy guide if you want to go off-roading. If you can find it, I would thoroughly recommend it."
