30 Jul 2004 - "returned on sunday 24th after
a two week holiday staying at the Marina studios in Golden Beach.
What a fantastic holiday, the rooms were kept clean, with clean
towels every second day. the rep was available (not that we needed
her!) 6 days a week!! the beach was fantastic, clean and not at
all overcrowded. the tavernas were all pretty good offering a litre
of white wine . two starters, three main courses (a child in our
party) and salad for under £30.
we walked onto Vigli for the Greek night which was fun, and the
taverna just before the steps to Vigli offered meat from the spit,
the owner and staff all really friendly. i cannot say we had a bad
day! it was relaxing, fun and i would go back next year no worries.
this place is ideal for families (not that it is advertised in the
brochures as such) we were recommended by Lunn Poly and have no
regrets whatsoever.
WARNING. . . mozzies are out in force . . take vitamin B1, and cover
selves in insect repellent!! to ensure excellent hols . . ."

29 Jul 2004 - "A fantastic restuarant to
eat in Limeneria is the "AMICI" The food is pizza/pasta/steaks
etc. We tryed various dishes (we ate their nearly every night)
and each one was amazing. The children loved the Pizza's &
Spaghetti Bologanise, all were homemade.
The owner Andreas was extremely friendly and very tolerant of
our noisy and lively children.
The prices we found were very reasonable and the setting was breath
taking. All in all a must to visit. Please say to Andreas Ryan
from England says hello."

28 Jul 2004 - "Got back from Scala Potimia
in July. Had a lovely holiday and many nice meals at all the different
restaurants. Stayed at the Aliston which I have to say were very
nice studios but the owner Thanansis was one of the most unfriendly
people I met there. He was OK for the first few days but if you
went out each evening for a meal he started to sulk with the all
the people as they did not use his bar. His prices were at least
one third more than the most expensive in the resort and no one
drank there because of this. On the last day 10 out of the 14 rooms
were being vacated and he would not allow anyone to pay extra to
keep the room on.
Not a business man as he would have made many euros by asking the
cleaner to come a little later or god forbid do some work himself.
He usually just sat all day and watched what everyone else was doing.
He kept all passports until the last day and even when asked did
not want to give it back and if he did he would only give one back
and keep the rest (oh yes he insisted on all passports not one per
room)
Forgetting him the holiday was great, very relaxing and would in
future years go back but too many other islands to try. Enjoy yourselves
if you go."

27 Jul 2004 - "Well, tomorow we are off
to Scala Potamias and we can´t wait to have a fantastic
cold Mythos beer at Sarahs and Stelios Bar the Coasters. It´s
on the left side when you enter the village and it´s the
most fun place there. Sarah and Stelios close whenever they feel
like it. Most of the times we get home by sunrise. It´s
grat to see them all tomorow.Like I said we can´t wait."
From G. Young, North of Scotland
22 Jul 2004 - "Returned from Pefkari in the
south of the island on 21st July 2004. A beautiful little village
with perhaps 8 beachside tavernas (All next to each other) -one
with excellent professional bouzouki music twice a week.
Stayed in the excellent Hotel Thassos where the food is good, the
accomodation and facilities are good, the views and sunsets are
beautiful, the location is good, the prices are reasonable, and
there is no noise.
Everyone is so friendly. A lovely little village with everything
you need, including a nice sea breeze, and very few mosquitos.
Very few British people - makes a change
Prices were similar everywhere
- two course meal with drink - £8 to £11
- large beer - £1.75
- triple gin and tonic - £2.80
- beach sunbed hire - £2
- boat hire with outboard (From Albatross) - £42 day
- local taxis - £1.40 to £2.
Nice beach, about 300 yards long with free sunshades.
Potos is the nearbye small town - 12 minutes walk - with cash machine,
good shopping and more tavernas. This is more lively for the younger
at heart.
A fantastic holiday - everyone we met had been going there for years,
and they said - don't tell anyone about Thassos............so -
try Corfu!
And finally - privately arranged trips are half the price of that
charged by the tour operators - what's new?"
From Graham Middleton, Cambridgeshire, UK
15 Jul 2004 - "I have been a visitor to Skala
Potomias for over 14 yrs and in that time I have found a good taverna,
the Akrogiali, Mikoli and Fedra has always greeted me as a friend
and the food is second to none."
From Josie Jones, West Midlands, UK
13 Jul 2004 - "Visited Thassos in September
2001, Stayed in Skala potmia, Susie studios, Loved the whole island
special favourites Skala Marion, Aliki and of course Skala potmia.
Accomodation allocated on arrival this year, staying in Skala
Potmia again. traveling from Birmingham on the 29th August, Can't
wait"
From Jill and Peter Rowley, Staffordshire, UK
12 Jul 2004 - "Arrived back last night from
our fifth visit to Thassos, have been going there since 1999 and
in that short time have seen many changes, (Please dont let the
authorities spoil such a quiet, peaceful island by making it too
commercialised.)
We were "allocated on arrival" a lovely
apartment at the Green Sea Apartments in Skala Potamia overlooking
the pool.
All the tavernas mentioned by others on this site
are great, in fact there wasnt one that we have visited in all these
years that was bad, but if in Thassos town, do go to moyses near
the new ferry harbour as that is our favorite, you wont be disappointed,
"Brians" in Skala Prinos is a lovely place to eat by the
waters edge and watch the sun go down. In Skala Potamia have a drink
in The Thomai Bar and eat at The Korali restaurant or at the Green
Sea Taverna on the beach, but wherever you stay or wherever you
eat you wont be disapointed - This is surely a little piece of Heaven.
Do hire a car or jeep if you can and tour the whole island as every
resort is so very different, but whatever you do enjoy it."
From Brenda and Graham Drinkwater, Manchester,
UK
12 Jul 2004 - "We have just returned from
2 weeks staying at the Marina studios Golden Beach. What a great
time we had can fully recommend Thassos for a great relaxing holiday. The
studios were very clean and well equipped, towels changed every
other day bedding twice a week. Our favourite eating place was
The Fedra at golden beach and for a great night try "NEENEN'S
IRISH BAR" run by Mick and Wendy especially Tuesday and Friday
when Mick gets his guittar out and a good singalong is had by
all."
From Mike and Julie Willis, Surrey, UK
11 Jul 2004 - "Just back from Thassos this
evening and thought I'd leave thanks and advice.
A big thanks to Thonasis, George, Vagelis and family
who run the Nostos appts at Golden Beach. Superb apartments, excellent
service and superb Greek lessons. Also big thanks to Peter and Claudette
Kartalis who run Speedy car rentals in Limenaria. Excellent cars
(brand new Kia for us with A/C and a CD player that was better than
my own!!, very helpful and very good prices- give Peter a call or
email.
Advice- DON'T PARK OUTSIDE THE HARBOUR RESTAURANTS
IN THASSOS TOWN!!! We did and got a 65 Euro fine!!! If you do, the
tickets all in Greek and no-one seems to know how much and to where
to pay the fine. Go to the Port Authority (Coastguard?) Building,
1st floor opposite the Police station.
Do hire a 4x4 jeep and drive the off road area
to Ipsario mountain range, find the track to the old radar/satellite
station (didused) on the top of Ipsario and take in the 360 degree
panoramic view!! Absolutely Awesome!! Then drive off road again
to Kastro and have a bite to eat at "The Kantina" Basically
an old hotdog van perched on a concrete base, but I can guarantee
you will have the best meal there. The lady uses all fresh veg,
meat and home cooked bread and the chicken souvlaki is the best
I've ever had in 13 years of visiting Greek islands and all for
about 10 Euros!!
Do enjoy the island and have fun, the local people
are very pround of their home and are willing to share their knowledge,
language and ouzo with you if you make the effort."
From David & Sarah, Suffolk, England
06 Jul 2004 - "We have just returned from
yet another fantastic holiday on Thassos, we stayed in Golden Beach
at the Hotel Fedra. We have been coming to this Island since 1987
and this was our 8th visit, there has been quite a few changes since
our first visit but it is still a wonderfull Island and we would
not consider going to a different one.

08 Jul 2004 - "Just returned from my first
visit to Skala Potamias, and enjoyed every minute of it, you just
could'nt help but relax. Tried various tavernas but were drawn
back time and time again to KRAMBOUSA, the food and wine were
absolutely fantastic and very reasonably priced. I would recommend
anyone to try it, but make sure you're there before 9.30pm as
you may not find a table. EXCELLENT!!!!!"
From Jeff Edwards, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, England
08 Jul 2004 - "Just got back from another
2 weeks in Skalia Potamia Thassos, thank you Sarah and Alex of
Golden Sun, great representatives from a somewhat disorganised
company. Thank you Pauline of Potos Cars for great service as
always. Thank you Jotta and family of Athrion Studios. Too many
god eating place to isolate but should mention Captains, Aegeo
and Akrogali and Platana in the Village of Potamia. See you all
soon

From Graham Blant, Lancashire, England
06 Jul 2004 - "We visited Thassos with a couple
who visited last year and loved the place. We were not dissapointed.
We stayed at Thassos Town at Villa Lena apartments and travelled
with Thomas Cook. This was a good base, the bar and pool were good
but the accomodation was only adequate and small. To explore the
island we hired a car from Hermes car rentals who were the best
price. (100 Euros for 5 days hire for a Hyundai Tosa - last days
of low season hire in June).
Best restaurants were Moyses (sometimes referred
to as Mouse), Simi , and Zodiac with great cocktails and views at
the Island overlooking the sea. Best by far although a drive out
was Vigli at Golden Beach Fedra , a must for the spectacular cliff
top views overlooking the sea and food superb.
Take time out to visit Eric's bar at Scala Potamia
where Eric Cantona's look alike will allow you use of his pool complex
as long as you buy a drink or have a bite to eat. He is a friendly
chap and he showed us his brand new for 2005 marble apartments -
a touch of class and a must if you want luxury and are willing to
pay a little extra. We also visited Potos beach and for a small
cost (3 euros) can hire sun loungers for the day by the weaters
edge. Lovely sea restaurants and bars here also."
From Peter, Cleveleys, Lancashire, England
06 Jul 2004 - "Just returned from another
superb 2 weeks at the 'Aliston', Scala Potomias. The island still
has not lost any of it's character or charm, and we'll be back again
next year.
Like others though, I am puzzled as to the tour
operator's attitude to Thassos. This website proves that the island
has immensely strong support from British holidaymakers, and yet
nothing is done to encourage tourism. I know that everyone (including
myself), is terified of ruining the place with over commercialisation,
but some of the apartments, bars and restaurants are having a really
tough time this year. The withdrawal of Libra has caused a drop
in visitors, Thomas Cook just seem to be greedy with their brochure
prices, Goldensun only operate 2 inward flights a week, and there
have been concerns about their overall operation, (which probably
cannot be publicly discussed on here).
It is noticeable however, that the German and Dutch companies such
as Sudtours, appear to be expanding their interests, and are taking
on more properties. If this continues, we Brits. may have to make
our own arrangements.
Anyway, back to Thassos, we've been going for six
years now, and I reckon that the best meal for quality and value
has to be 'Mousses' at the far end of the ferry terminal. Excellent
fillet steaks, seafood and fish dishes, friendly staff, and take
your camera for the most amazing sunset photos. (I'm going to try
and post mine on this site now)."

04 Jul 2004 - "visited thassos for the first
time in may this year, a lovely island peaceful and friendly locals.
stayed at afrodite apartments. its run by Costas, rooms are very
clean (the cleaning lady is a demon with a mop), with lovely views
of the sea. we would like to recommend a visit to see Kate and Richard
at the Starfish bar. also CJ's for an excellent cooked breakfast.
we stayed in Golden Beach which has a good selection of restaurants
and supermarkets (but not like the size of tescos). the only down
side was all the building that is going on over the whole island,
i hope they don't spoil the island. we will be back again next year
hopefully."

June 2004 after a super 14 day stay on the island of Thassos.
We stayed at the Anna Beach apartments in limenaria having booked
through Kosmar holidays. The owners, Dimitri and Tanya were very
friendly and the accomadation was clean and tidy. The apartments
were loacated on the beach front . . . . .

From Roger and Carol, DERBY, England
26 Jun 2004 - "We arrived back in England
on June 16th. after spending four weeks in Scala Potamias, we stayed
at Costas apartments which are close to the beach and also just
a few minutes walk from all the shops, bars, and tavernas. The apartments
are the best we have ever experienced in Greece, spotlessly clean,
spacious and very comfortable. There is maid service six days a
week and towels and sheets are changed twice a week. Each room has
television telephone hair dryer, use of air-conditioning, when required, and
there is plentiful hot water. The views of the mountains are fantastic,
every evening, we would watch the sun set from our balcony, you
can see the sea from there as well! The owner, Costas and his daughter
Maria are very friendly and helpful, as well as English, German
and of course Greek is spoken.Staying there had a lot to do with
this being our best holiday yet,we are returning there in September
Libra were the agents there last year, but when
they pulled out of Thassos, they left Costas and many more apartment
blocks without any bookings. Costas will shortly be found on this
site. Because of not having a tour operator, it made us sort out
our own travel arrangements and it was all very easy. We traveled
by Easy jet to Athens and then Aegan Air on to Kavala, a short taxi
ride to Keramoti, on to the ferry and we were in Thassos.
Our favourite beach has to be Paradise although
there are several others that could easily become personal favourites.
There are many good tavernas in Scala Potamias, our
favourite has to be Nautilus, you will get a warm welcome from Costas
and his wife Katerina, the food is very good, try the sea bass.
We are pleased to report that Thassos remains un-spoilt
and that prices are no different to last year. It is puzzling to
try and work out the tour companies purpose in not promoting Thassos,
more charter flights are needed to make getting there for shorter
stays to be more viable. Anyone going for two weeks or more, you
should not lose out by going the way we did, and of course you tailor
your holiday to suit yourselves.
Looking forward to September, Roger and Carol."

leave as everyone is so friendly. Had lovely breakfast's at CJ'S
5 euro;s for a full english and pat is english so you can have
a laugh with her. Phillpi was our main place to eat in the evening
super food'service and always hot food and good menu. Please air
us a sunbed for september. Thank you to natalie and staff at the

17 Jun 2004 - "If you are thinking of staying
in Skala Potamias, which is a very lovely place, try and avoid choosing
Dimitra Studios as your accomodation. The woman who owns these rooms
is not the friendliest of people. On arrival were given what must
have been a complimentary roll of toilet paper and when that ran
out we had to buy our own. There was only ever enough hot water
for one person to shower. I reckon the owner used to hide in the
bushes at night cos everytime I put the balcony light on when sitting
outside to read she would suddenly appear, throwing a wobbly, telling
me to turn the light off cos of mosquitoes. The other guests were
told that on our day of departure they could keep their rooms on
till 4.30 p.m. When we asked her she tried to charge us 70 Euros
for the extra 4 and a half hours. Pretty steep I thought seeing
as the cost of the room for one night was only 30 Euros. Whenever
she had been in the room to clean we had to play 'hunt the remote
control'. Mostly it was found hidden at the back of one of the drawers
in the room. The accommodation was extremely basic with some very
nice retro curtains (original 1970's I'm pretty sure). The only
thing in its favour was the nice garden.
Last year we stayed at Makrina Appartments, also
in Skala Potamias. This place was great. Lovely big airy rooms and
the brother and sister who run it are very nice. I'd stay there
again anyday. (We paid the same here as at Dimitra).
Our fave places to eat are Magic Coast (delicious
meat off the spit), Nautilus which is run by Kostas and Katarina.
Try their fried feta. Yum! Katarina is the perfect hostess. She
is so friendly and could talk the hind legs off a donkey! Koralli
restaurant is also very good, I had the best lamb chops of my life
in there. The only really bad meal we had was in Theagenis. It was
cold and not very nice at all.
Favourite beach is Paradise Beach but don't go
if you're a prude as one end is for naturists. Theologos and Kastro
are both definitely worth a visit. Potos car hire in Skala Potamias
do some very good deals. The English lady who works there is very
helpful.
Avoid Eric's bar at all costs unless you are a
holiday camp type of person. It is run by a Greek guy who looks
like Eric Cantona and he milks it for everything he can get. If
you like your holiday to include karaoke, quiz nights, footie, egg
and chips etc.etc. then you will probably quite enjoy it.
Thassos is a beautiful island and anyone going
who has not been before I'm sure will not be dissapointed."

Very Basic,V,Very Hilly (need oxygen mask by time you get to the
Emerald.)could do with a little train or something to take you
to top.You have your own private swimming pool (no shower curtain).
Only 2/3 supermarkets,no PROPER SHOPS. O.K if your a boring sod
who likes total peace & Quiet, dont like shopping, dont like
a choice of more than 2 bars, can drive, Preferably a tank to get
you to some of the quaint little villages that are only accessable
up bumpy dirt track roads TRY GETTING TO CASTRO FOR EXAMPLE.........The
goats are friendly tho'."
From Dave & Julie, Manchester, England
17 Jun 2004 - "Just returned from Thassos
(16th June 2004). We stayed at the Athrion Apartments in Skala Potamia,
we had one of the three bedded rooms, which are a lot bigger than
the doubles and have views of the sea on one side and the mountains
on the other. The apartments are modern and clean but can be noisy
because of the internal stairway which amplifies any noise from
selfish people slamming doors at 7.00am instead of using the key.
The Athrion is close to the beach and halfway between
Skala Potamia and Golden Beach. The bus service is regular and punctual(Honest)and
the buses have A/C and seatbelts.(euro 1.10 to Thassos town).
The best Taverna is 'Green Sea', which is close by and has a nice
swimming pool (free sunbeds), the food is excelent and plentiful
and a large Amstel is only 1.80 euros. You'll love it."
From Jan Gordon, Leicestershire, England
15 Jun 2004 - "What can I say about Thassos
except - heavenly! I have visited Thassos for the last 5 years staying
at Golden Beach Resort, Blue Bay Hotel. The peace, scenery and tranquillity
are breathtaking.
Opening the Patio doors each morning to the breathtaking
view of the bay and mountain backdrop is awesome. I sit on my balcony
and soak in the view. Absolute bliss! The hotel is small and family
run who are perfect hosts. Nothing is any trouble and Effey and
her home made apple pie are legendary!
Thankfully the Hotel is placed on a steep incline
and without a pool. This suits our needs perfectly. No noisy bars
close by but within 10 mins you can take your evening stroll down
to the Vigli Resturant and sit overlooking the bay while feasting
on the local delicacy.
As soon I get off the plane I breathe in the warm
summer air head for the local ferry port to Thassos Island and think
I'm home.
Holiday anywhere else, not on your life!!"

14 Jun 2004 - "just got back from our 1st
( but not last) holiday in Thassos. It was truly magic. We had
a seagul escourt from Kavala to the island and as we approached
it rose majestic from an azure sea.We knew we were to stay at
Skala Potamias but not where. We were given the Blue Bay studios
and were enchanted to find the owner waiting for us with a glass
of ice cold orange. On being shown to our studio we had a rose
put on our pillows. What a wonderful welcome. The owners Dina nad
Stelios were warm and friendly and nothing was too much trouble
for them.Simply Thassos was a great excursion and the local bus
took us up into the mountain village of Panagia.FANTASTIC.Thomson
rep Lizzie was great and always smiling..a credit to Thomsons.Eat
at Megos Alexandros and try a Black Jack at the cocktail bar (
forgotten name..sorry ) Whatever you do and wherever you go have
a wonderful time."
From gerard, brighton, england
12 Jun 2004 - "I recently stayed in Scala
Potamia. I liked it. the views of the bay and it's mountains are
stunning and the nearby villages are lovely. Take a walk along the
walking-route from Golden Beach to Panagia, the scenery is spectacular
along this route and only takes a couple of hours. You can bus it
back to the resort easily enough. The busses in Thassos seem to
be pretty reliable.
Food: Most of the food in Scala is not great, just
basic. Ironically, the best restaurant was also the emptiest restaurant
in Scala Potamia: Magic Coast. The food here is excellent and the
service the friendliest. I think it was always empty because it
stands apart from the rest of the restaurants and bars (in many
ways), and the furniture isn't modern (or the reps were putting
people off it for some reason. Avoid those people, they're only
there to ruin your holiday, and stay well away from their "welcome
meetings" - or maybe you enjoy being treated like an infant...hey,
whatever floats your boat!), anyway, if food and wine's your thing,
get yourself down to Magic Coast. The friendliest Taverna is Nautilus.
Basic rule: shabby furniture = friendly atmosphere.
Beaches: Paradise beach is very nice, despite the
exposed penises of strange nude men walking up and down the coastline.
Unfortunately, the nicest side of this beach is for nudists, apparently:
as far as I know, even bathing topless is technically illegal in
Greece, so if any of them are offended by your swimming clothes,
tell them to mind their own!
Climate: What can I say? Don't go in May!
Finally, a little off subject, don't recline your
seat on the plane. The reclining function on your seat is not for
your comfort, it's more a service provided by the airline people
for the purpose of picking out selfish people to avoid when you
get to your destination (though the same people will always find
you again, and sit on top of you again, on a beach . . . with loads
of space!)"
From jean lovell, west sussex, UK
11 Jun 2004 - "I am afraid it is me again
recommending places and people on Thassos. If you venture down
to Golden Beach go into Starfish Bar it is run by two english
people, one an ex-rep. and her partner. You will receive a very
friendly welcome, and peanuts ect. with your drink and the tolets
are emaculate, well worth the visit."
From jo, yorkshire, UK
11 Jun 2004 - "Just returned from staying
at the Anna Beach studios in Limenaria and although we had a good
time we were very disappointed with our room at the Anna Beach.
On arrival we were allocated a room on the 4th floor (no lift) which
was extremely small, with no view at all.
I enquired if we could be allocated something on
a lower floor as we are "senior citizens" and found the
stairs quite difficult and we were given a better room but it was
at the side of the hotel and all we saw was the brick wall of the
next door hotel. The studios were very sparcely equipped but for
3 euros we could buy a full english breakfast with plenty of coffee
and fresh orange juice and we found eating out in the evenings to
be very reasonable. Would reccommend Molo's, Asterias and George's
tavern (opposite the taxi rank)."
From Sam, East Sussex, UK
10 Jun 2004 - "My boyfriend and I returned
from Scala Potamia a week and a half ago. We had a great 2 weeks
and are still gutted to be home. Here are a few points that I
hope might be helpful for those planning a trip to Scala Potamia/Thassos:
- If travelling in May take some warm gear for evenings out as
it got pretty chilly.
- Give the buses a go. They were always on time, and stopped everywhere
along the main Island road.
- Visit Aliki and Paradise Beach. They are very attractive and
well worth a visit.
- The views from the Aloe studios were amazing and we found it
to be spotlessly clean.
- Try some of the walks around Scala Potamia. The views on the
walk up to Panagia (from Golden Beach) are breathtaking.
- And Golden Beach is far nicer (in our opinion) than the beach
at the Scala Potamia end of the bay.
Have a great time anyway if you're off to Thassos soon!"
