From Keith Jackson, Wales, U.K 30 Aug 2006 - "We were on Thassos, for the
first time [hopefully not the last ]between 13/8 and 27/8.
We stayed in Skala Potamias at the Green Sea Apartments.
This is a gem of a place, good room, great service, nice pool,
fantastic food in their taverna and the best, imo, location on
the bay.
The two guys running it were tremendously hard working.
SP has very good tavernas, additionally we visited - by bus - [easy
once you decipher the time table ] Panagia, lovely place and Thassos
town. By car we went to Psili Amnos, Aliki, Stelakis and Pefka.
I'd go back again, and we tend not to do that, thats how highly
I rate it."

21 Aug 2006 - "Wow. Simply wow.
We have been captivated by this jewel of the Aegean. One of the
best holiday's we have both been on either as a couple or individually!
The service (with the exception of 'Budget' (Bold, italic and double
underline that word!) car hire in Thassos town! Weren't even open
at the time it said it'd be open and had to wait 2 hours for our
car!) was impeccable, the hotel was gorgeous (Socrates - Scala
Prinous - George and the family were extremely hospitable and curteous;
the rooms basic but modern and clean), the scenery breathtaking,
the beaches unsupassable (especially Paradise beach - we both have
found the pleasures of nude swimming and sunbathing! To clear up
the confusion over which sie of the beach is the naturist side
- it's the left side as you're looking at it from the road! Spot
the nekkid people roasting on the rocks!), the food amazing (ordinarily
I'm a vegetarian but the lack of veggie food led me to eat the
fish which I have no regrets over!!), and the history of the island
intriguing.
We reccommend to ANYONE, young or old, looking to explore or just
relax. Go before everyone else does."

19 Aug 2006 - "For friendly service and
excellent food, visit Syrtakis in Limenas (Thassos Town) It is
the last taverna on the road past the old harbour, and often has
live music and dancing with the owner Nikos joining in. Well worth
passing all the other tavernas en route to this delightful place
which is situated right on the edge of the beach.
Ivie."

From Joanna Lutkin, Cambridgeshire,
UK 02 Aug 2006 - "We had another lovely week
in Thassos from the 30th June 2006. We stayed at Eric's appartments
and were allocated an actual appartment rather than the usual studio.
This consisted of a bedroom, bathroom and a seperate kitchen/diner
and balcony. The quality of the room was outstanding compared to
the places we have stayed in Greece before. So we were very impressed.
Eric and his wife Christina make you feel extremely welcome and
keep you entertained during your stay. Whilst we were there they
didn't have any theme nights so it was a bit quiet in the evening
round the bar. During the day the pool area is a great place to
be and it didn't get too busy either. The resort of Skala Potamia
was as lovely as always, we ate mostly at the Alexandros restaurant
as the staff are lovely and the food is great. We also took the
trip down to Golden Beach a few nights to eat at the Fedra where
we liked the huge menu choice! Durning the day we either went down
to Golden Beach to sunbathe, stayed round the pool or traveled
round the island on a scooter, which is a fun way to get about!
Another lovely holiday in Thassos, it was our third trip and we
loved it as much as ever and look forward to returning again!"

19 Jul 2006 - "Have just returned from our
seventh holiday on Thassos.
Once again we stayed at Pension Fedra in Golden Beach where we
are always warmly welcomed by Niko,Rula, and all the staff, especially
Yana and Andreas. We love the Fedra and always try to have a mountain
view room. The beach is just steps away from where you can have
all your meals,or just a drink, and the food is the greatest.Good
places to eat also Pefka, which is in a lovely setting, and Finikas, where
they do lamb kebabs to die for.Vigli also has a good menu and fantastic
views. There are some beautiful places to visit on Thassos and we
usually hire a car from Sue at Potos(it's the cheapest)Our first
stop is always Panagia,a lovely traditional Greek village and the
oldest on Thassos.
We will definately be back at Fedra next year,we are missing everyone
already."

18 Jul 2006 - "My fiance & I just returned
from 2 weeks in Emerald Apts in Golden Beach. 30/06/06 - 14/07/06.It
was an excellent holiday and I cant recommend it enough to anyone
who wants to unwind and relax completely in beautiful scenic surroundings.
Costas the Emerald Apts owner goes above & beyond everything
you would expect, Finikas was our best food but closely followed
by Fedra who are some of the friendliest waiters! We had one bad
meal which was in Thassos Town - awful! However, this didnt ruin
our holiday by any means, it was excellent.
We arrived to temperatures of over 40 degrees but had 2 days of
a storm which actually meant we travlled the island so was great.
Only warning is - WASPS! especially on the beach first thing in
the morning, there are hundreds - I am terrified of them but even
i was ok and saw no-one get stung!
Enjoy your holiday!!!"
From Roger and Carol Burns, Derby,

14 Jul 2006 - "We visited Thassos again
in May, staying until June 17th, the weather was mostly fabuluous,
in May we had temperatures which you would expect to find in August,
then in June, it settled down to a more normal temperature. We
travelled independendly again, with British Airways to Thessaloniki
and having a car from Potos cars to drive to the ferry. We have
travelled independently seven times now, so if any further advice
is needed, just ask - we did post a message with advice on independent
travel on Jan 11th. About Tassos taverna, we were in Thassos until
October 3rd last year, and Yanni and Elga did not say that they
would not be opening again. We believe that they used to have a
small bar in Kalirachi, which they ran in the winter, they live
in Kalirachi, we did intend to try and find them, but ran out of
time ! we must try again in September.A man who was a waiter there
last year was working at Captain's Bar, so he will possibly know
where exactly they are. We wish all of you going out there soon,
a fabulous holiday."

11 Jul 2006 - "We have just returned from
another wonderful holiday on Thassos, we stayed at the Pension
Fedra in Golden Beach as we have before, as always it was fantastic,
the hotel has wonderful views of the Mountains or over the bay
and the Taverna downstairs has a great menu and great food.
You may have heard the stories of the coaster that hit the sandbank
in the winter, when we were there it was quite close in at the
Scala Potomia end of the bay, they have removed half of it and
were working on the other when we left, it certainly did not affect
our stay.
The Fedra has always been our favorite place to eat, not only because
of the food but also Niko and his staff, there are other places
that we would also say are very good, the Playa d Ora and Pefkas
must be tried.
The unfortunate thing for us is that we have always travelled with
Thomsons, hopefully this is now a thing of the past, we have wanted
to go for three weeks for a couple of years now but cannot do this
with Thomson, we have now decided after all these years of going
to Thassos that we will go independently next year flying to Thessaloniki
(any advice is welcome)we are going to book accommodation direct
with Niko from the Fedra who has built a new hotel just up the
road, the Enavilion.
Thassos is a wonderful Island, if you are considering going there
for the first time you will not be disappointed, as long as you
enjoy peace and quiet, extremely friendly people and excellent
Tavernas.
I shouldn't really be promoting Thassos as a destination as we
all like to keep it a secret, but I only think it fair that this
secret should be shared, if only to support the locals on the Island
and especially Golden beach.

here! thanks for your good wishes peter although i realise your
soaking up the sun already and its a pity we missed timed this!
as it would have been lovely to meet up.
as you are probably aware i have booked this trip independantly!
we are flying from gatwick on the 18th july @ 7.45am, (i have invested
in an dvd player for the kids so i hope we wont have the ususal
chorus of "are we there yet" because the answer will
be NO!!!
flying to thessaloniki, we have hired a mini bus to drive to keramouti
with potos cars, as there are 6 of us travelling, 2 adults and
4 children! (please pray for me!!) we will then hopefully reverse
on to the ferry, i will leave that to the man of this partnership!
after achieving this we will sit back and enjoy the nearing view
of our island. We have hired a house in potamia with joy oh joy
a washing machine!!! no more surf board towels!! we will then exchange
the mini bus for a jeep and then bliss.
i have contacted janet from c.j's who requests tea bags, but she
also informs me that our great friend yannis and his wife elka
and little boy thoma are not in potamias this year the thasos resturant,
my little boys will be mortified, they wont be able to ride thoma's
bike up and down between resturants! bury him in the sand or see
him running across the beach in an asda tee shirt with my chidren
crying " that looks familiar".
if any of you have any information on his whereabouts on the island
please let me know, we will be carrying out a man hunt when we
get there, no taverna will remain unvistied, we will track him
down! (hopefully)
well thats all for now i will definately give you all an update
when i return! just realised we have to make the reurn journey,
and this will not be the same will it!! lets hope the kids dont
scratch the dvds and render them useless, mommy will have to invest
in a big bag of cotton wool!
i forgot to mention that i have done this whole trip for £1500!
lets hope its money well spent, i will let you hold on to that
thought and look forward to contacting you with a synopsis when
i return!
tally ho!"
From Claire, Mal, Betty & David,
North Wales 11 Jul 2006 - "Just returned from our second
visit to Thassos and Thassos Town. Only went for a week this year
and it wasnt long enough. It felt very strange, like we'd never
been away when we walked off the ferry onto the quay side. Our
first visit was June last year but it felt like yesterday. A couple
of changes have been made to the shore just passed Moyseys, a few
developments that we hope do not grow and end up spoiling this
wonderful island. Our walk into town from Nikolleta, which is on
the main road going out of the town, is lovely along the shoreline
and passing a few apartments and tavernas. Its very natural, walking
on rough ground next to the sea but we are scared they are thinking
of paving the walkway, to go with the new developments which will
spoil that rustic, basic environment.
But overall Thassos still has its charm. Went back to some tavernas
as last year, Moyseys which was fab, with Greek night on Sat, Posidonas
which has great food and a great Greek night on a Monday if you
are off there soon - Posidonas is on the main road leaving Thassos
Town and is worth the visit. Symi's which was my favourite last
year still has great food but this time there were a few dishes
on the menu not available when we asked and we were slightly disappointed.
Went up to the ampitheatre, which was fenced off last year and
saw the wonderful views of the town and harbours. Thassos people
are so lucky to have a home like that. Lets hope the tourist trap
doesnt spoil it."
From Steve Blakeman, Birmingham,

10th July, our third visit to Potos stopping in the Kamari Beach
Hotel for the second time, a very good hotel at the far end of
Potos.
A few bits of information.
Zooom Taverna has closed, Big Bob has done a runner owing many
thousands of euros.
Alex at the Boomerang Bar is back home in Sydney for the entire
year, the boys are still as welcoming as ever.
Next door to Boomerang I would like to recommend Tavern Irene,
after the closure of Zooom we tried the Tavern Irene, food superb,
staff so freindly, and the owners Kostas and his wife Miranda great
hosts, finally if in Thassos Town a new place to eat,Restaurant
Thassian, run by Katrin a Thomson Rep and her boyfriend Rigas,
the stuffed sardines done to perfection. Thats all for now must

01 Jun 2006 - "We have just spent the first
week of the season in the area of GOLDEN BEACH on the island of
Thassos. We came to Thassos a few years ago and stayed in Thassos
Town. We loved the island so much that we returned this year. We
booked with Thomson and we got a great late deal for a weeks stay
at BLUE BAY HOTEL. The hotel is approx 800 meters from the beach.
A problem if you are less mobile. But the walk was pleasant and
the hotel was lovely. Anna and Nicky (the owners) were very friendly,
the rooms were cleaned every day! As this is a Bed and Breakfast
hotel there are no catering facilities in the room at all. No fridge
or kettle. Just two tooth mugs provided! So if you like a cuppa
- bring your own travel jug!! There is a TV showing various greek
tv channels. But the hotel was lovely and all the rooms have a
breath taking view of the bay. Looking at the surrounding hotels,
we were so pleased we had chosen the BLUE BAY hotel. A breakfast
was served daily and it was a varied and generous greek breakfast.
Toast, coffee, tea, orange juice, cheese, ham, jams and in addition
a varied breakfast added each day. Bacon & eggs, yogurt and
honey, cereal, boiled eggs. This was a great part of our day as
breakfast is served in their hotel garden overlooking the bay!
As we were the first guests of the season many of the tavernas
were closed but the few that were open were lovely. We must mention
Sotaris Tavenera on the beach front. This was a family run taverna
and was exceptional. Playa D'Oro was another excellent place to
eat. This taverna had a lovely German waitress with excellent greek
who was lovely to chat to. She was helpful and charming and all
the food was excellent.Great Pizzas! Everyone seemed to be raving
on about Fedras. We went once but it really didn't do it for us.
The staff seemed to be making a fuss over the guests who were always
eating there. If you were a new customer you really didn't get
first class service. We also had a drink in ENA bar on the beach
front. It is run by a lovely couple who really bent over backwards
to make you feel welcome. It seems that anywhere you eat in Thassos
a free dessert is provided after every evening meal. The restaurants
we mentioned even give you a free ouzo or metaxa occasionally which
we thought was lovely. But over all the holiday was fantastic.
Our rep JODIE was very professional and lovely and ever so helpful.
Don't be afraid of using the buses! They were on time and it was
a great way of getting around the island. And very cheap. We were
glad we went early in the season as it was lovely and quiet. And
the weather was great too. Just a couple of cloudy days but it
was hot enough! Would go back to GOLDEN BEACH again and especially
BLUE BAY HOTEL!!!"

25 May 2006 - "Hi all
If you have been going to Thassos for any length of time, you may
have visited Terry at the Harbour Lights down in the harbour,
I have heard that Terry has given up the bar and is NOT opening
this
season (shame) good bar.
Good news is that the RUMOURS bar run by Wanda & Paul, Has
opened this year for the second time and well worth a visit. .
.
There has been a few changes also, road works are beeing done around
the old harbour going towards Panagia Beach, a good thing but Now
of all times !!!
Thassos is still a great place to visit, as the locals are very
friendly, the food is great and the island is very scenic. Hire
a Jeep and get out and see the sites. . . .
Happy Holiday's . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."

the people are lovely. I have noticed that 'The Nest' restaurant

we stayed at the villa edem apartments in thassos town which was

we have only praise for yiannas, litsa and her boys and the apartments

14 Jan 2006 - "Every credit to you Jube, if
your mother makes it to Thassos by 6p.m. on the same day, and I'll
stand corrected if it all works out. Admittedly, you'd have about
an hour and a half start on me, cos' it takes us that long to get
to Manchester airport and to park up. It would still mean a very
early start for us, bearing in mind that we have to check in 2 hours
prior to take off. It's about a 3 hour+ flight, and last year we
took off at 7.30 a.m. and travelling independently, we beat evryone
to the ferry, and the taxi got us to Scala Potomias by about 2.30
p.m. I suppose it's possible, but does your £224.00 include
the transfer from Manchester to Gatwick? If so, that's a great deal,
and I assume that the flight times link up O.K.? Best of Luck, and
keep us posted as to how it all panned out."
From Jube, Oxford, UK
12 Jan 2006 - "To Peter Kerone, who was asking
about access to Thassos from the North West of England. My Mum lives
in Stockport and I have just booked a scheduled flight for her for
ten days in August to and from Manchester, Gatwick, Thessalonika,
all excellent times, for 224 pounds.
She'll hire a car at the airport = 50 euros for an online booking
with Potos cars and drive to Kermoti in just over two hours. She'll
leave home at 7.30 UK time and should be on Thassos by 6 that evening!
Have a look before all the cheap seats go.
Good luck and hope to see you there!"
From Peter Kerrone, Lancs, England
24 Jan 2006 - "Reference Hilarys' observations
about Eastern Europeans. Last year I did notice a few more on
the ferry, but not in our resort, (Scala Potomias). Mid June was
very quiet, and consisted mainly of Greek tourists, and us Brits.
On our days out though, most of the other resorts further north,
did appear to have bigger contingencies of Italians and French,
and Potos especially, always seems to be popular with the Germans.
(They definately dominate the Makryamos villas, and beach). No
evidence of WW3 breaking out though!!
From Josie Jones, West Midlands, England
23 Jan 2006 - "I have been trying to contact
Katarina and Costas who ran the Nautilus Taverna in Scala Potamia.
I eventualy made contact through the web site for the Castle Studios
in Scala, they are no longer running the tavenra. The Nautilus
was my favoutite tavenra. Lets hope that the new owners carry
on the fine tradition of wonderful food and the best welcome on
the island. We are visiting the island in August."
From Hilary, Hampshire, England
23 Jan 2006 - "Couldn't take a holiday this
year as we were in the throes of moving but even though it's been
18 months since our 2nd vist I still lull myself to sleep on restless
nights with the visual postcards I have. And we've stayed both times
in unfashionable Scala Rachoni.
Two things I'm still unclear about. 1. Travelling to Thassos independently.
Probably because we can't plan months in advance we found both flights
and accomodation far more expensive than a package. The flights
weren't too much of a surprise but the accomodation was - we knew
where we wanted to stay but the manager, who'd planned to buy the
studios, couldn't so we said we'd stay where she'd moved to, despite
the cost seeming a bit much. Didn't mind too much as she gave a
service that was above and beyond what you expect in Greece. No,
not great room servicing but books, lilos, beach games, honesty
bar. A few days before we were due to go she cancelled - she'd split
from her partner - but she got us back to Rachoni and booked in
not far from where we'd origianlly wanted to be. We didn't mind
paying a bit more as it was such a late booking. When we got there
the studios were very new and only 1 other (Greek) couple were holidaying
there - so why not a discount or 'introductory offer'?
2) "progress" - i.e. Eastern European. On our 2nd visit,
merely a year after our first, the expansion of the EEC community
meant there were far more Eastern Europians holidaying in Greece
as a whole, but in particular on islands such as Thassos. An economic
Godsend, given that British travel companies had effectively pulled
out. But in this first year of an expanded community there were
so many Eastern Europeans that the hitherto idyllic unpopulated
tiny beach was crowded. And however much the Greek folk like the
English it felt they were already preparing for a switch. Has this
been obiouis to you?
Need to know as although husband thinking of a more exotic trip
this year I KNOW we will need the peace, relaxation and freedom
of a Greek island and I would dearly love it to be Thassos - the
best one out of all we've been to! So is it still relatively undiscovered
or been over-run by the world and his wife????? PLEASE let me know."
From Pete & Diane, essex, england
17 Jan 2006 - "We have stayed in Skala Potamia
three times so far and have booked to go again this year(2006).
A beautiful island with wonderfull people. We spend most lunch times
and evenings at Thomai's bar where Vasilis and Yota make us feel
very welcome and we have become good friends with them. We look
forward to seeing them soon.
The first time we went we stayed at the Aloe apartments which were
very clean and had an incredible view of the bay.
the second and third time we went we stayed at the Semeli studio's
same again they were very clean and we were made to feel very welcome.
Thassos is certainly one of the most beautifull islands and we shall
be returning for many a year to come."
From Peter Kerrone, Lancashire, England
16 Jan 2006 - "All these messages about cheap
flights to Thessalonika are making me envious! It's all right for
those who are a couple of hours from Gatwick, but spare a thought
for us 'oop North'! There are no direct flights from any of the
North West airports to Thessalonika. Getting to Gatwick (or Heathrow),
with the traffic nowadays, is almost a day's drive! So, with a 7.30
a.m. flight, it entails an overnight hotel stay prior to flying,
and also adds another day off work to the equation, (possibly two
days if you're knackered from the drive back at the other side)!
So you can see why I've been campaigning for more cheap flights.
Anyway, I don't hold it against any of you, (honest), and I suppose
around 400 quid each at the location of my choice, ain't bad these
days, and we know when we get there, that it'll have been worth
every penny.
It's bucketing down at the moment, but reading these letters brightens
up the evening, and maybe we'll bump into one or two of you over
there, (although I haven't a clue what you all look like)! We're
at the Korina from July 2nd for 2 weeks, so pop in for an ice cold
Mythos!"

I will look into that for 2007 as we already have booked for 2006

From Roger and Carol Burns, Derby, England
13 Jan 2006 - "We just thought we would offer
a little encouragement to those who are contemplating traveling
independently to Thassos. Like many contributors to the site, we
have visited Thassos many times, and have got there by many various
ways. Last May, we paid £600.00 to Thomsons for flight only
to Kavala, actually, at this time, we met Julie Flaherty and her
family, and understood how difficult it was for them to return to
Thassos. We decided to try the British Airways flight to Thessaloniki,
as we consider Thomsons too expensive , and were impressed. The
extra leg room, extra baggage allowance, in-flight refreshments
included in the price, much more pleasant than the charter flights
and the budget airlines. Until such time as there is a direct scheduled
flight to Kavala, we will always travel this way. The flight gets
you there in plenty of time to get to the ferry the same evening,
the road from the airport leads to the ring road and from there
to Kavala. Without rushing,we arrived in Keramoti in less than three
hours, the road is good and the scenery superb (it is worth taking
a little extra time on the return journey, to be able to stop at
a couple of places, as the road mostly follows the coast, the views
are great). Once at Keramoti and on the ferry, Thassos is in sight,
and you know you are almost home! Anyway we are returning in May
going this way and look forward to seeing again, our many friends
in Thassos. We had pre-arranged our hire car, it was waiting for
us, so it all went smoothly."
