From Chris and Angela Raymer,
UK
26 Aug 2001 - "Just spent a week in Potos
14th - 21st August. Very hot but very few mosquitos at all (about
4 bites between us!)
The best restaurant by far was Zooom on the main
road - just up from the cross roads in the centre of town. Pefkari
beach - 10 minutes walk from the town towards Limenaria - well
worth the visit plus has good snorkling and watersports.
Thank you for your site as it helped alot prior
to our holiday. "
From Jeremy Harris, UK
17 Aug 2001 - "Just got back from wonderful
Skala Potamia. The weather was hot, hot, hot except for 2 cloudy
days. Golden Beach is clean, sandy and shallow enough for my little
girl (aged 6) to swim in safety and we saw only 1 jelly fish in
2 weeks. The food is cheap and good quality everwhere. I would recommend
Thassos to anyone except those looking for an 18-30/ lager lout
type of holiday."
From Steve Shore, UK
17 Aug 2001 - "I have just spent a wonderful
two weeks holiday at the Alexandra Beach hotel in Potos. The hotel,
staff, food and gardens were absolutely excellent and thought
the hotel deserved a mention."
From Caroline Higgins, Gosforth, UK
13 Aug 2001 - "We've just returned from a
week at the Taverna Steki, having found out about it from your site.
Many thanks for an excellent recommendation! Katerina looked after
us so well, and her cooking is irresistible. She specifically asked
me to send her love to you and Sue - which is the primary reason
for this message. The rooms were completely full whilst we were
there, and I know that the German family in the next 2 rooms also
found her through the internet.
I had booked flights to Kavala with only a very
sketchy idea of what we would find at the other end, on the basis
that I've never had a holiday in Greece that I didn't enjoy. However,
if it hadn't been for you, I think we would have had a real trek
round trying to find somewhere to stay during peak season - booking
in advance made life a lot easier!"
From M & J Bruce, UK
8 Aug 2001 - "After my initial enquiry,
just had to let you know we have just got back from Skala prinos
and it was the best holiday ever! All doubts were quickly cast
aside. Accomodation was excellent (through Thomson Small & Friendly)
and the 'resort' was lovely & quiet, you could still get a sunbed
on the beach (And free at that) even if you didn't go down until
nearer lunchtime.
Excellent place, thought you'd be interested."
From Tony and Eileen Carter, Gloucester, UK
13 Aug 2001 - "Have just returned from Skala
Potamias staying at the Hotel Aloe. This was our fourth visit to
the Island, the third staying at this hotel. The hotel is very clean
and the self-catering studios, are quite large and even has a "bath"
in the bathroom but still no shower curtain. The B & B rooms are
small. All rooms face the sea and the view from the upper floors
is terrific. The hotel offers extras like a TV and security boxes
(and air conditioning in 2002) but there is an extra charge for
these - not mentioned in the brochures. We have already booked to
return in 2002.
We have no hesitation in recommending the self-catering
studios for cleanliness and comfort, and for the warm welcome from
Harries, the owner, we received on our arrival. We would however
mention that the hotel is situated on the main road thru' the village
from Thassos Town which means a bit of climb up the road from the
centre of the village. The hotel entrance is also situated at the
top of an incline through the front forecourt which is very pretty
with lots of potted plants and flowers. For this reason this hotel
would probably not be a good choice for someone who maybe a little
infirm and has difficulty walking uphill.
From Liz Bellingham, Wolverhampton, UK
10 Aug 2001 - "We're now back from Thassos
and planning next year's trip already. We stayed at Nefeli Studios,
perfectly situated between The Green Sea (favourite restaurant)
and Mandragoras (favourite bar) All our friends still there from
the previous years, and we made new ones.
To the people that liked the Tasos Taverna -
we did the chalkboards - in exchange for lunch of course! Looking
forward to seeing everyone again next year - Message for George
from Digitech, Panagia, Save my lost property for me, I'm coming
to reclaim it!"
From John and Barbara Lord, Manchester, UK
6 Aug 2001 - "Just returned from holiday staying
at Ioannis Golden Beach Hotel, Chrissi Ammoudia (Golden Beach).
Quite a quiet resort but has several good tavernas for eating out.
Tried Golden Sand, Fedra, Sitoris and Viglis amongst others. Would
recommend Sitoris for value and friendliness and Viglis for fabulous
views and excellent meals (try the stefado).
Accommodation at Ionnis . . (note - John and
Barabara have then a lot of comment about the resort and facilities
see the link below)"

From Paul Stephens, Bath, UK
6 Aug 2001 - "The Taverna Akrogiali is approximately
5 minutes from the centre of Skala Potamias, slightly further
on than the Krambousa, and facing the sea. Traditional Greek cuisine
with excellent calamari and lamb dishes. A very friendly family
business run by Manolis and very popular with Greeks (always a
good recommendation)."
From Katja Kamphoff, Netherlands
3 Aug 2001 - "Thassos already stole my heart
some 12 years ago. The first time me and my family went there was
1989 - the year that the second big fire destroyed a great part
of the island. I was only a litle girl - 10 years old - then, but
I already sensed the ultimatly relaxing atmosphere of the island
and its people. I knew then that I would have to come back there...

From Karen Lane, UK
28 Jul 2001 - "have to contradict the first
comments on eric's bar. yes quite expensive but the atmosphere,
personality and character of 'eric' and his family meant we spent
at least a couple of hours there nearly every day.
rest of island beautiful. lushest beach is paradise
beach but was put off by the unfriendliest beach and bar staff.
take lots and i mean lots of mosquito stuff.
jungle formula seems best.
The men are friendly but do not leer or letch.
thank you thassos for a lovely holiday."
From David and Jan Jennings, West Midlands,
UK
27 Jul 2001 - "those of you who may be going
to Skala in the near future, there are some changes that may be
of interest:
1) the bus stop is now in the centre,near the harbour;
2) a bus runs a shuttle to Golden Beach frequently;
3) Eric's bar now has a nice swimming pool, all are welcome, and
he only asks that you buy a drink and to quote Stratos (Eric) "not
champagne only coffee or a beer" some people (not English)were using
the pool twice a day for ten days and never bought anything!! what
a misuse of hospitality.
Tried a few more of the recommended taverna's and
they were all nice in their own ways, food, hospitality, welcome
etc.
We went across to Kavala again on the Dolphin (Hydrofoil)from
Limenas for a trip around the shops for pressies, this is an eye-opener
for those not initiated to the hustle and bustle of a Greek City, albeit,a
very nice place and great shopping centres, recommended.
Again, it is nice to read so many people are discovering
the tranquility and beauty of Thassos and are determined to return."
From Athanasia Chatziathanassiou & Jean-Marc
De Beys, Brussels, Belgium
27 Jul 2001 - "Actually, we just send congratulation
for your site. We live in Brussels but go several times a year
to Thassos, as we have indeed family there in Panagia. We also
make business (in Belgium and Greece) by importing goods from
Nepal (jewelry, handicrafts and so on). Well, see you next time
(we'll be on Thassos from 1 till 19 august."
From Tom, Nottingham, UK
26 Jul 2001 - "just returned from Limenaria
after a single week stay in the Vana Studios. The town, and island
are indeed beautiful, although if the idea of more than a few days
on the beach bores you, then think twice about coming! If you have
the misfortune to be staying in the Vana Studios, do try and stay
out the way of the owners...all sweetness and light if you chose
to dine in their restaurant ("Kostis", mediocre food), but are two
of the rudist people i have ever had the misfortune to meet should
you dine elsewhere!"
From Vladan Gacic, Novi Sad, Yugoslavia
25 Jul 2001 - "This is perhaps the best
site about Thassos I have found on the Net! Visitor comments are
very useful. I'll take a vacation in September and go to Pefkari.
Thanks for the site!"
From Paul and Jill Reeve, UK
21 Jul 2001 - "Hi there, we went to thassos
on the 9th of may this year. We booked with Hoppaway travel from
Teletext for named accomodation, we stayed at the crystal studios
in skala potomais, this was primitive and dirty even by greek standards.
We spent a lot of time in the Koralli taverna, run by Sakis and
his brother, we found them to be most hospitable and very reasonably
priced, the service and friendliness could not be faulted. to a
point we were lent an umbrella in the rain, and offered changing
accomodation on our departure day, because our own accomodation
expected us to leave our suitcases in the restaurant during our
departure day.
Erics bar - our one and only visit to this bar,
was found to be cold boring and expensive, his beer prices double
that of any other taverna.
Top of the class Koralli - bottom Eric's bar."
From David White, York, UK
11 Jul 2001 "As promised a quick report
on our first trip to Thassos. Katerina send her best wishes!!!!!!!!
As you will read we are most impressed with
Thassos and we thoroughly enjoyed our trip. Sorry to put the
comments in re- the Achillion but they are well deserved and
it wasn't just us."

26/06/01 - "Just returned from Thassos,
we stayed at the Hotel Demitiris, Golden Beach. We were made quite
welcome by Demitiris the owner and he looked after us for our
fortnights stay.I would recommend this Island to anyone who wants
a quite relaxing away from it all holiday. It has everything anyone
should want. We said that we would never go to the same place
twice, but after Thassos we have changed our minds and have already
booked to go back next year, same resort and hotel ."
From Tracie & Phil Fieldhouse, Tipton, UK
"We are off to Limenaria 19th Sept, so hopefully
the hot weather & mosquito problem will have died down by then.
Looking forward to seeing Anna & Dmitri again at Sunset apartments
near Trypiti, really lovely people! Anyone know where the best place
is to hire scooters? Thanks for this informative web site! Roll
on Sept......so good to get away from smog & the rat race for a
couple of weeks!"
From Jason, London, UK
"Just returned from our hoilday in Limenaria
Thassos. We really enjoyed ourselves and thought the town was
great, just right. We thought you might like to know that Limenaria
now has an ATM machine at a Bank of Greece which is now situated
at the end of the town before going up the hill on the way to
Potus. The town was just right for us and has a great selection
of bars and restaurants. There are now a couple of disco bars
which have loud music until at least 1ish in the morning although
this can't be heard unless you are staying right in the middle
of town.
The town is still quite traditional and tourists
still seem abit of a novelty as all the locals are very keen to
please.
A word of warning to everyone going to Thassos.
It was in the 40s everyday while we were there so this might have
increased the problem but they have quite a serious mosquito problem.
We got very badly bitten while we were there. It wasn't just us
moaning either as they locals were fed up with them. If you have
electroninc tablet machines then take them, but i would really
recommend anyone to get a mosquito net to pin on the wall or ceiling
in your room at night, about £10 from any camping shop. This is
not an over the top reaction, you have been warned.
Apart from that we had agreat time and recommend
hiring acar to explore the wonderful villages and bays. Thanks
again for your help."
From Justin & Sharon, Basingstoke, UK
"We just spent a week in Thassos, near Thassos
town (July 11th to July 18th), and it was our first time there.
What an amazing , and unbelievably beautiful island. We really liked
the fact that it isn't a typical mass-market tourism kind of place,
as there were a load of Greek families on holidays there. This really
added to the feeling of getting away from it all.
We stayed in Hotel Makedon, near Thassos town.
Thassos town was great - loads of tavernas and bars. We ended up
spending most evenings having a few drinks on the beach in front
of the Island bar , just past the harbour where the fishing boats
are.
We also visited Limenaria in the south by bus -
it worked out around £3 each return! Prices were incredibly cheap
by UK standards - around £1.50 for a pack of cigarettes, £1 on average
for a 1/2 litre bottle of Mythos beer, and most meals costing around
a fiver. In the supermarkets, the beer was even cheaper - 200 drachmas
for a 500ml can, which is roughly 30 pence!
The only big downside to where we stayed was the
mosquitoes - we literally got eaten alive. I must have at least
50 or 60 bites on me right now. This might have been due to the
incredibly high temperatures the week we were there - it averaged
around 38 degrees celcius most days. In other words - incredibly
HOT. Thassos town seemed to be located in a heat-trap, as Limenaria
had a wonderful sea breeze. This incredibly hot environment may
have added to the mosquito problem.
If you are going to stay near Thassos Town and
it is around 35 or above celcius , bring lots of anti-insect repellent,
and a mosquito net. The mosquitoes we were attacked by were very
very small, and usually attack when you are in bed asleep - not
very nice. It's a pity we weren't warned about this beforehand by
the travel operator."
From Katie, UK
"I have stayed on the Island twice and am
going back for a third time in August. I Recommend this island
to anyone considering it as a holiday destination. Golden Beach
is the favourite and Fedra, a taverna on the beach, provides the
best sea food while Vigli, a taverna on the end of the beach (opposite
end to Skala Potamia) Provides the best views."
From Ron and Joan Anderton, Burton on Trent,
UK
"Had 2 wonderful weeks in Scala Potamia. Disappointed
with Susie Studios. the best meal in town is definately the Krambousa
where Dimitris and Simone use all local ingredients to create amazing
greek food and welcome you as one of the family. Would recommend
the Eros II boat trips from Thassos harbour these are good value
for money. For the ultimate experience you must climb to the summit
of Ipsos, the views are amazing."
From Steve & Gill, Cheadle, Cheshire, UK
"Thanks for such a great site. We are traveling
to Thassos on 10th July 2001 your site has been very informative.
We will get back to you with how we got on. Thanks Again"
From John, UK
"My wife and I have just had 2 fabulous weeks
at Golden Beach 12/7 to 26/7. First visit to Thassos but we will
like many others hopefully make many more visits. We hired a car
through Potos car rental for less than 50% what the other companies
were charging. We ate at the Fedra,Vigli and Sotoris at Golden Beach
but by far the best meal was when we walked to Skala Potamia and
ate at Krambousa on the front. We found the island to be very accessible
to drive around so 3 day car hire was ample. The scenery was good
and the people friendly and the ferry crossing was highlighted with
dolphins and seagulls being fed by the passengers. It was so relaxing
that it seemed a very long 2 weeks but oh to be back there now.
Certainly 10 out of 10 to Thassos"
From Gemma, Bristol, UK
"Spent 2weeks in Skala Potamia July 2000
and reurning again this year. Can't wait to enjoy the food and
friendly service offered at the Krembousa restaurant!!!"
From Maria and Andy, UK (after their
holiday)
"we have just returned from Thassos!!What
a place! It has to be one of my favourite places ever visited!! We
didnt have clue where we would be staying but i dont think it would
have mattered!we hired bikes and went to nearly every village possible!we
actually stayed at the hotel socrates in skala prinos which was
an amazing hotel but more importantly the family who owned it were
so hospitable they made it for us!would recommend the place to everyone
and have!!!
hilights for me have to be the monastry where there
are nuns??!!?!!?and a little village we stumbled across called theologies!!
its strange but when i read some of the messages
and remarks people had made about thassos i thought we will see
1 greek island is much the same as any other but thassos is a real
gem never been anywhere like it before and i really think i would
be hard pushed to find anywhere i loved as much!!!could go on all
day about the place but im sure u havent got the time and if u have
been u will know for yourself!!! thanks for takin the time out to
reply and who knows might see u some time in thassos town!!!"
From Eileen Barnes, UK
"Hi, we have just arrived back after a fabulous
week in Thassos. We stayed at Skala Potamia, firstly can we mention
the TASOS Taberna. We ate there every night as we were so impressed
with the food and very friendly service (it was also very reasonably
priced."
From Georgia and Glenn, UK
"We have just got back from Skala potamia
and we"re well impressed. With both Potamia and the rest of the
island being so beautiful and not to mention Paradise beach!! We
can"t wait to go back. Some of our recoommendations are Paradise
beach, Paradise beach, nudist end of Paradise beach and The Lovley
Cove at....Paradise beach. Apart from that, we also recommend eating
at the Thomai in Skala Potamia for breakfast, a huge, delicious
breakfast, English, with coffee or tea and fresh juice. Anything
you like. The Aphrodite for lunch or dinner, the Krambusa, the Korali
and the Avalon, all for evening meals. The service was good at all
of them and the food was excellent and reasonably priced. The shops
are all convenient and everybody is friendly and knows a bit of
English, it dosen"t take long to learn token greek though, especially
when you are there. The beach at Skala Potamia is good, even excellent,
if you haven"t seen Paradise beach.....Did we mention that place?
We toured the island on a scooter, no crash helmet,
wind in our faces (and bugs!) and we braved the hairpin but breathtaking
bends. The views were so stunning and beautiful, from the sloping
hills and backdrop mountains, to the rugged west coast with the
sun facing you as you look out to sea. It"s got to be seen to be
appreciated. We were novices on a shared scooter and (when we"d
got off) we loved every minute of the trip. After just a fortnight,
we still haven"t seen enough, we spent too much time sunbathing
until we got used to the climate! Roll on next year, then we can
have another holiday.
By the way, don"t worry about the transfer, it
is most enjoyable, you arrive at the small airport, catch a coach
from your tourguide and go on to a lovley ferryboat trip across
to Thassos island, It all takes about an hour and it"s quite a break
from the cramped airplane. If you want to know anything, we can't
wait to talk about Thassos even more."
From Sinead Loughlin, N.Ireland, UK
"Visited Thassos last year with older people
and was really surprised how much I really enjoyed it. The locals
were especially friendly, I am returning this July for another
two weeks. Yordannis at restaurant Thassos really made us feel
welcome."
From Maria and Andy, UK (before their
holiday)
"so excited just booked our first holiday
together and we decided to try thassos!heard really greatthings
about the island and ur web site made up our minds! wanted to go
to a place in greece that is still greek!!!and thassos seemed the
ideal place!!let u know what we think!just know we are goin to love
it!!!"
From Andy Costello, Brighton, UK
"We're off to Thassos in a couple of weeks'
time on a late booking. This site made up our minds for us! I'll
let you know what we thought when we get back. My experience of
Greek Islands is pretty limited so I can't wait. Keep up the excellent
work."
From Tracie Fieldhouse, Tipton, West Midlands,
UK
"We went to Thassos in Sept '99 and enjoyed
it so much we are going back this year, we have never been to same
place twice. You will not be disappointed where ever you stay, we
are going back to the same apartments Sunset by Trypiti. We were
made very welcome. We shall hire a scooter and visit all the island,
visiting again our favourites - Aliki, Panagia and Scala. Lots of
great restaurants and friendly folk!! Love it!"
From Tony & Diane Goulding, Cleckheaton, West
Yorkshire, UK
"We have just returned from our first visit
to Thassos (May 2001). We really enjoyed our stay at Taverna Steki
with Katerina and her family. The accommodation was excellent
and wonderful food. We hired a motorbike for a couple of days
and we fell in love with Aliki - beautiful bay and golden sand.
Excellent holiday and we will be back."
From John and Susan, UK
"Katerina and Jorgos made us so welcome at
The Steki, where it is THE place to find excellent Greek food in
Skala Potamias."
From Sheila Morgan, Bristol, UK
"We spent 2 Beautiful weeks on the Island
and are Returning this year for another Holiday. It is my idea
of Paradise, Thomai is the place to go and see when staying at
Skala Potamia. See you there!! "
From Phil & Jo Hallows, Coventry, UK
"Good site - as we have been to Thassos for
the past six years we have been looking to find out what the weather
forecast is - and now we will be able to check - thank you!
It's really nice to hear other people's views on
a place that we fell in love with and now don't want to go anywhere
else for our holidays. We can honestly say that we have never had
a bad meal in any of the tavernas, the people are all warm and friendly
and can't do enough to make you welcome. Our favourites in Golden
Beach are: Fedra (for lunch), Vigli (for the views and entertainment),
Sotires for location. In Scala we love Captains, especially for
his fish and enjoy a late night drink at Thomai's
Can't wait to get back and see all our greek and
english friends again."
From Julie Nash, UK
"I have a few "must do's" from our previous
visits - 1. Vigli Taverna, overlooking Chryssi Ammoudia beach
- 2. Maragios restaurant on the waterfront in Limenaria - 3.A
drive up to Profitis Illias church in the hills above Theogolos
- 4.The evening atmosphere of Limenaria and the beautiful Trypiti
beach.
We can't wait, stuck here in the English rain!"
From David and Jan Jennings, West Midlands,
UK
"Jan and I have been going to Skala for many
years now, most times twice a year. We particularly enjo the hospitality
at the Flisvos where Vangeli serves traditional Greek food, cooked
in the Greek way. We have tried and enjoyed may other tavernas,
they are all good in their own special way, thats what makes Skala
special to us.
I would strongly advise a trip by hired jeep to
the summit of Ipsylon (??spelling - my greek is terrible!!) write
your name in the visitors book, make a comment also, then enjoy
the splendid views through 360 degrees and see heaven on this earth.
Lunch time snacks and beers, try the "Bud Hut" next to the bus stop
in Skala Centre, or on Golden Beach, the Vigli.
We are returning on 3rd July 2001 via Thomsons
and staying at the Semeli for two weeks again, nice studios.
From John and Glenda Allen of Sheffield, UK

From Clare of Rochdale, UK

to Skala Potamia since 1995. We are thinking about making our 4th
visit. We love the beaches, the bars, the restaurants and above all,

food is excellent - we have our own table! the best bar is Madragoras."

From Anna Macintyre, UK
" I came to Skala Potamias last year on holiday,
and did not know quite what to expect. It is absolutely beautiful,
a lush green island, with such wonderful beaches, all the people
we met were very friendly, from taverna owners to the scooter rental
people. The food I ate ranged from good to excellent. It had a very
relaxing and pleasant atmosphere, I would recommend it to anyone,
and will certainly be coming back within the next few years."
