From Brian and Linda Clenton,
Staffordshire, England
31 May 2002 - "We arrived back from Skala
Potamia 31.05.2002. Had a terrific time, fabulous food, great
people.
If you walk along the front from the harbour,
there is a general store on the front that advertises that they
sell bait for fishing. The people there are very friendly and
speak good English, we had been using them for a few days and
mentioned that a few of the items that we were buying were for
a salad, they did no more than go into their own garden and gave
us a lettuce and spring onions for nothing.
Another person who was vety helpfull was the
proprietor of cars 4u at the blue hotel on the sea front. His
hire charges for a Hyundai Metiz were 17.02 euros per day.
We had a brilliant time, met Eric Cantona's double.
Thanks for your site."
From Rob & Kit Mayne, UK
30 May 2002 - "We have just returned from
two weeks in Skala Potomia and this is our third trip to Thassos(
and our umpteenth to greece). We have had a wonderfull two weeks
on a jewel of an island made even better by such friendly people.
It is allmost a shame to recomend anywhere specific but for a perfect
evening:-
1- Have a meal in the Nautalus with Kostas and Katrina, you will
be made to feel as though you are good friends the first time you
walk through the door and it just gets better every time. If you
don'tsee what you want on the menue, just ask. I had wonderfull
Pasticio made the very next day.
2 - Wander around for a while and then have expresso or hot chocolate
and/or metaxa at Bar Thomai. The best coffee on the island and free
greek lessons."
From Wendy, Essex, England
23 May 2002 - "Just wanted to say thanks
to everyone who has left messages on this site, im going to Thassos
in 4 weeks, have just booked a late deal so had no idea what to
expect as ive never been to Greece before. Found all the comments
very helpful! Im staying in the Theas studios (not sure on that
spelling!) in Thassos Town. Thanks again to everyone - keep it
up. I'll be back to write my own comment when i return!"
From Karl Walker, UK
16 May 2002 - "the hotel maria is the best
hotel in potos i have been to potos 5 times and that was the best
one their. all u have to do is go out of ur room and there is a
bar and walk a little further and their is your pool and to make
it even better it is 3 minutes away from the beach and shops."
From Terry and Margaret Pemberton, Lancashire,
England
15 May 2002 - "we have just returned from
a wonderful week on thassos(along with 39 others)martial arts
training in the morning and chilling for the rest of the day.
we dined regularly at fedra, golden beach, where the food was
great and the staff went out of the way to accommodate large numbers
all wanting to be fed and watered at the same time. with tastes
varying from "pizza and chips"-(that was seb) to "i want to taste
everything" (gary)with several degrees of vegetarianism and one
or two "i cant eat thats" the almost impossible challenge of pleasing
us all was met and conquered.our thanks go to all of the people
of thassos for lending us part of their beautiful island for a
while. we will be back!"
From Dave Walker, Yorkshire, UK
16 Apr 2002 - "I would just like to add my
comments on the beautiful island of Thassos. I spent a week in Limenaria
with a friend of mine in 2000, my first time. We stayed in the Villa
Filaktos Apartments. The accomodation was beautiful, no complaints
whatsoever. They were privately owned then but I believe Thomson
Holidays own them nowadays. I enjoyed my stay there that much I
am looking forward to taking my wife there this year. Thassos is
the ideal place for a 'chill out' holiday.
Whilst there, my friend and I frequented many of
the restaurants and tavernas but two in particular were outstanding
value for money, Kostis' and Asterias. We found these to give excellent
service and very friendly. I can't wait to go to Limenaria again.
It wont be long now."
From Liz Williams, England
30 Mar 2002 - "Thank you for an excellent
site, we are hoping to travel to Thassos for our very first holiday
abroad and your site has made it so much easier to see what is
there."
From Stuart Miller, UK
20 Feb 2002 - "We will be visiting Thassos
this year for the fifth time in the last six years. We stay in Skala
Potamia at the Hotel Aloe which is excellent. It's back up the hill
from the main beach (about a 3 minute walk)and all the rooms have
a glorious view of the bay, which I think is one of the most beautiful
views anywhere in the world. The hotel is very clean and well maintained.
Aris and Maria who run the hotel are very friendly and helpful -
but then on Thassos who isn't?
True Skala Potamia isn't a particularly lively
resort but it does boast some excellent tavernas. The best by far
is

From
Carrie Jess, England
7 Feb 2002 - "I've travelled all over Greece
during the past 20 years and visited many of her Islands. Then...
with a friend in 1996 I found Thassos! Wow.... Scala Potamias!!!
i've returned each summer (now five times) and in 2000 spent the
whole summer there. My sister and her partner came too in 1999
for two weeks (they'd never even been to Greece before and had
no particular inclination to holiday there and now are planning
a return trip this summer).
A big hello to all who know and have met us (Carrie
and Amy... Sue and Tony). Especially anyone who waves and smiles
while we trundle by on our little motorbike at 20mph. In Particular
to Yanis at the Captain's Taverna and Sakis at Sakis' Bikes. To
the voice of Teresa (see her sing at Zorba's) and to Chrisoula
and Matthias.
Hope to return this summer. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
You won't find a nicer Island or friendlier people."
From Mick Benson, Kent, England
27 Jan 2002 - "I have stayed on the island
of thassos three times and have found that the people, the food
and the scenery are exellent.
As for eating out I can suggest a visit to Zodiac
bar ( for english foods) exellent host's Simmis bar for a good atmosphere
and greek food for greek food head for zorba's. There are many other
eating places to try, it is a case of trying as many as you can
in such a short two week holiday.
On my three visits to Thassos,I have always stayed
at the villa lena. This is a very well kept villa, nice swimming
pool, pool bar and with good host's. It is situated on a main road
but is very quite, there is a super market opposite that caters
for all your needs, I will certainly be visiting the Villa Lena
again 9 out of 10."
From The Vales, Lincs, UK
19 Jan 2002 - "The Vales have travelled
to our beautiful Island for the last three years, and we would
not go anywhere else than Potamia. We have made many good friends,
both Islanders and visitors to the Island. Potomia/Skala Potamia
is just PERFECT. We are Keith and Elaine, and Kehan (sheep's-head
eater) and Lauren. We would love to here from anyone (via the
Contact Page) that either know us or would like to here our many
wonderful experiences. And, we just hope we can make it to our
Island again this year."
From Mick Benson, Kent, England
9 Jan 2002 - "great site hope it keeps getting
good response."
From Susan Knight, Wirral , UK
5 Jan 2002 - "Just to say I found this site
very helpful in deciding on a Greek island holiday. It seems just
what we are looking for!"
From Carol & Roy Williamson, Lancs, England
27 Dec 2001 - "We have stayed in scala for
the past 4 years. We have found a wonderful apartment called the
Nefali. It even has a electric kettle in the room (not many have
that do they), it is spottless clean and close to all amenities.
It also has a bar and this year 2002 hopefully a swimming pool.
Look forward to returning in 2002 to see all our old friends again."
From John Peacock, Leicester, UK
29 Nov 2001 - "Enjoyed reading your site
comments.
We have been to Thassos four times and are booked
for May 2002. Each time we have stayed at the Socrates Hotel,
Skala Prinos. The family running the Hotel, and yes the owner
is called Socrates - are wonderful. Only 27 rooms - plus some
new self catering accommodation - right on the beach with a 20yard
plus swimming pool at the front of the hotel. Probably about six
or seven tavernas in the village which are all excellent value
and very good food. Buses covering most of the Island travel from
the ferryport in the village (don't be put off they are not intrusive)
and ferries direct to Kavala about every hour or so - the buses
always are on time!
Miles and miles of beach to walk on, peace is
not a problem here. It does get hot in Thassos particularly July
and August, but there are plenty of places for shade etc. We have
visited many of the Greek Islands and some of the mainland, but
Thassos has no equals!! Visits there have prompted me to learn
the language and that helps no end in making friends. If you are
going then "Kalo Taxithi!"
From Anna Gillatt, Kent, England
28 Nov 2001 - "A group of friends and I visited
Thassos in September this year (2001), we are all in our late teens,
so u can imagine we had a pretty wild time! But we made time to
take in the amazing scenery and breathtaking views. I've made a
promise to return to one of the most beatiful places i have ever
seen!
Anna."
From Paul & Tish Miller, Gloucester, Virginia,
USA
26 Nov 2001 - "We traveled from USA to UK
then to Thassos We would just like to mention a little place we
stayed in run by a English/South African family called Villa Castello
just out side the town of Limenas, very clean and the price was
good. We just can't wait to save up and visit maybe 2003."
From Rafal Borkowski, Poland
6 Nov 2001 - "I have been in GREEN BAY Hotel
near Limenaria in September 2001. It is realy very nice hotel and
very close to the beach. The beach is in the bay so there are no
big waves. 100 m from hotel. Nice two taverns at the beach.
Problem - 3 km to city, but taxi 1000 drahm and
you are in 5 min in the city.
Raf."
From Jeanette, Cornwall, UK
27 Oct 2001 - "My family and friends have
spent four holidays on Thasos in the last 18 months. We just fell
in love with the Isand and in particular with its people. We have
two teenage girls 15 & 17 and although your other site visitors
say it's not for the 'girls and boys' they are even more in love
with the place than us, and plan to return in their "Year Out!"
We have stayed at the George Hotel, Villa Eden
and Tarsanas. All booked through Kosmar, who seem to us to be
the best value. I can recommend Simi Sytaki and Tarsanas for food
and good company, beaches, we liked Golden beach Aliki and Gourgiotis,
We have booked already for next July and looking at these pages
has almost brought tears to my eyes, Thasos has entered my heart
and I just cannot wait to return. Thank you for such a brilliant
site, I shall visit again. Here's to your good health David and
I hope you will soon be back on OUR ISLAND!!"
From Jennifer Brown, UK
11 Oct 2001 - "Have just returned from 2 weeks
at Anastasia Studios Golden Beach, perfect place for a relaxing
holiday, owner George & family very helpful, rooms very clean everything
first class. Studios are directly on the beach and without the usual
greek cockerel & goats outside so uninterupted nights sleep.
Hired a jeep from Cars 4 u in Scala Potamia and
circumnavigated the Island several times, getting lost up the mountains
and trying most of the beaches.
Great holiday & hope to return soon , added to
list of favorite Greek places along with Stoupa in the Mani."
From Alexandra Curcic, Belgrade, Yugoslavia
11 Oct 2001 - "I first spent my holidays
in Thassos with my family back in 1972 and remained 'faithful'
to the island for 16 yrs (my parents even longer). I may say that
I virtually grew up at and with Thassos. I long for it and its
unique athmosphere ever since my last holidays there in 1988.
All I can say that I cordially reccomend the
island to the people of all profiles and preferences - you will
enjoy. And now, that I have a child of my own, I intend to go
back and show her places where her mother spent the most wonderfuly
days of childhood and early youth.
Compliments for your site If you have contacts
with locals, I would love to hear from and for Mr. Panagiotis
Varounas (NISTERI beach), or hotel LIDO - Thassos people in the
main city (Thassos)
Best regards and wishes Alexandra Curcic"
From Richard & Hazel Sherwood, Isle of Wight,
UK
9 Oct 2001 - "Just returned from 2 wonderful
weeks in Thassos, at the Dimitra Studios midway between Skala Potamias
& Potamias. Very clean, lovely hot showers, brilliant views of the
mountains, but not geared up for much cooking, not that you would
want to, the food is so cheap.
All the tavernas on the beach were good, particularly
recommended - Krambousa,Captains,Koralli & M. Alexandros, the Vigli
at Golden Beach & the Steki about 50 mts from our apt.
Car rental from Potos, very good & cheap. Climbed
Mt. Ypsarion, 5 hours up 2.5 down, going very steep & rough but worth
it for the views.
We loved it & will go again when we have saved
up our pennies or euros!"
From Robert Cleminson, UK
8 Oct 2001 - "I read this web site often
before our recent holiday to Skala Potamias and found it very
usefull, I would now like to add my own small contribution.
We stayed at the Aloe Studios and found them
clean and comfortable with wonderfull views over the bay, an uphill
walk from the beach but without the hill you would not have the
view. The selection and quality of the local tavernas was excellent,
our favorites were,Arkogiali (kleftico), Karambousa (meze starter)and
the Koreli (mixed fish plate). The beach and sea were lovely but
we also found the bees to be a pest and my wife was stung three
times.
All in all this is a lovely place for a relaxing
holiday and May/September the best months for weather. I can well
recommend these studios and resort to anyone."
From Steve Taylor, Wolverhampton, UK
4 Oct 2001 - "Just spent a week at Scala Potamia
and wished to pass on our views of a local taverna we used.
We visited many different eating establishments
but ended up going back time and again (we ate out 3 times a day)
to the Nautilus Taverna which is run by Kosta and Katerina. The
food was obviously excellent otherwise we would not be recommending
them but the main reason for our comments is the hospitality they
offered to us and every person who visited. It has to be the most
pleasant eating venue I have ever been to. I would visit the island
again simply to go back and say hello.
Car hire was from Kinira (just by the Harbour)
Lynn (from the Midlands) and Jimmy her Husband. Lynn took as much
time as we needed in explaining all the places to visit (or not)
on the island. As with the Nautilus the hospitality was 1st class.
Walking past a few days later and we got the call "fancy a cup of
tea?" We had coffee but how nice!"
From Jon and Miranda White, Essex, UK
23 Sept 2001 - "We have just returned from
a lovely fortnight in Thassos at the Golden Beach resort. We stayed
at the Nostos Studios and travelled with Thomson Holidays, which
proved very good. The owner of the Nostos Studios was very friendly
and welcoming, and they were well equipped and spotlessly clean.
The weather was mostly hot. One or two cloudy
days and one thunderstorm! But that was at night and we were back
to clear blue sky in the morning.
To say our holiday was exciting is maybe a bit
of an understatement! We were both attacked by an octopus while
swimming off Aliki beach. It wrapped itself round my leg, and
then proceeded to jump on my husband's back! It was very scary,
and made us jump, but we were not hurt. There were also lots of
jelly fish there that day - but it was the only time we saw them
during our entire stay. We also witnessed a tornado (twister)
during a storm over the sea off Potos, which was fascinating.
Again though we weren't hurt as it was too far away.
What WAS a problem though were the bees. There
were loads of them on the beaches (I guess it's because they make
honey on the island) and I was stung twice which wasn't very nice.
Not a mosquito in sight, but we had some bites from sand flies
that were as itchy as mosquito ones!
Our favourite restaurant at Golden Beach was
the Ta Pefka (on side road near tiny chapel). Great food and service
with seating outdoors under huge fragrant pine trees, next to
the beach. The Vigli restaurant was also v.good.
We can recommend Potos car rental. Very good
value indeed. We walked to the villages of Theologos and Panagia.
Very traditional Greek. V. interesting.
All in all a very memorable holiday!"
From Veronica Cook, UK
3 Oct 2001 - "We stayed at the Athrion appartments
for two weeks from the 12 September 01 at Skala Potamia. They were
extremely clean and modern and a short walk to the beach. It is
the best island in Greece that we have to, totally uncommercialised
and friendly. We liked the Krambousa to eat and also the Avalon.
We took a boat trip on the Thassian Spirit booked through Golden
Sun but would not reccommend it. It would probably be better to
book direct at Thassos Town with some other boat. We also booked
a jeep with Potos car hire and drove off roading through the mountains,
really good fun!
The best holiday we have had for ages!! Wish we
were there now."
From Rolf Dyresen, UK
23 Sept 2001 - "We're just back from Limenaria,
and we can inform you that there now are two ATM machines in the
town. One at the end of town at the bank of Greece. the Other
at the Bank of Agriculture on the main road in the road cross
where the road goes down to Limenaria centrum."
From David and Lindsey Singleton, Lancashire,
UK
22 Sept 2001 - "We enjoyed a week's break
in Thassos Town at Paradise Appts through Airtours. The accomodation
was very basic but we did not expect luxury as we booked a late
deal (acc allocated on arr) through holidays by phone. The Paradise
appts do not have a pool but you can use the neighbouring Fotini
and Macedon Hotel facilities. If we were to go again we would like
to stay at the Aethria Hotel as it looks fabulous, has a great pool
and situated only yards from Thassos Town.
Best Taverna - Zorbas! Great food and Greek dancing.
If you are hankering after an English breakfast, best place is Zodiac
as it is quick and good. In the other two English bars (Ronnies
& Dave & Sue's)it can take upto 45 mins before you eat! Zodiac also
good at night for steaks, fish etc. Posh Spice is great if you fancy
a curry or fish & chips! Best Beach - a little sandy cove with about
15 people on it. Head out of Thassos Town in the direction of Prinos
and about 2 miles down that road you will see! a clearing with parking
and an idylic little golden beach with bright blue sea.
Hire a scooter! Great fun, really cheap (£40 for
6 days- Billy's bikes) and explore the island! We went nearly everywhere
but still could not find a beach that beat our little one! Do not
be put off by travelling to Thassos. We throughly enjoyed the ferry
crossing and our appts were 5 mins from the port. Cash machines
available in Thassos Town that take most cards. Town comes alive
at night with bars and street vendors. Very relaxing holiday for
couples and families. Not an 18-30 holiday troupe in sight! Not
the place for a gaggle of girls or boys - stick to Corfu!
Really enjoyed ourselves - would go again."
From Dave &Linda Eatherington, Leicestershire,
UK
18 Sept 2001 - "We came back last week from
a wonderful fortnight staying at the Hotel Socrates in Skala Prinos. We
checked this site regularly before we went and took peoples advice
about mosquitoes etc (we even bought a net!). As it turned out
I think the mossies had outstayed their welcome by the beginning
of September,we hardly saw any!
Skala Prinos is a typical working Greek village
and was great. Dont listen to that other negative site. Our favourite
tavernas in Prinos were The Nest & Mavolas (Kostas the owner was
great) and Zorbas & Simi in Thassos Town.
The beaches were excellent and I enjoyed some
of the best snorkelling of my life.We will be back!"
From Dave Patrick, Dorset, UK
16 Sept 2001 - "My partner & i have just returned
from a wonderful 2 week holiday on Thassos,we stayed at a very lovely
& exceptionally well run hotel called villa nikoleta in Thassos
town. We booked through Kosmar & they are very good indeed they
seem to be the specialists on thassos.
We found some fantastic beaches, especially recommended
is makriammos beach, just a short water taxi ride from thassos town.
We ate out every evening in and around thassos
town and were never dissapointed, the best of the restaurants were
SYRTAKI & MOYSES also TARSANAS at tarsanas beach was excellent where
you could eat just 10 meters from the waters edge!!!! wonderful,
we'll be back."
From Maggie & Keith Puttick, UK
14 Sept 2001 - "Just returned from 2 weeks
in Skala Prinos and want to echo previous comments that it's a
brilliant place for a holiday. We stayed at the Calypso where
the breakfasts were excellent and Rula (the owner )was very friendly
and helpful. Only watchout was that the pool bar played lots of
(c)rap music till quite late, not to our taste!
It was great to watch the guys in the boatyard
(no high tech stuff there) and also the ferries coming and going.
Best taverna was 'The Nest', followed closely by 'Papangelos'.
Loads of beaches to choose from, too. Hire a car and go round
the island - there's quite a lot to see.
Thassos Island, and Skala Prinos in particular,
is highly recommended."
From Pam Roberts, UK
5 Sept 2001 - "Thank you so much for replying
to my enquiry regarding cash machines in Thassos so promptly. The
bank in Thassos Town does take cirrus so you can use it like a cash
machine at home,it also takes Visa and Mastercard.
We had a fabulous holiday and we will certainly
go again. We couldn`t believe how inexpensive it was to eat out at
the Tavernas and how good the food and the wine were.It was one
holiday we all enjoyed as we went with my parents and my teenage
sons and their girlfriends. Once again thank you for your help."
From James O, Crawley, UK
1 Sept 2001 - "I have just returned from
a week in Thassos with my fiancee (28th Aug '01) We stayed in
the Hotel Socrates in the resort of Skala Prinou. The weather
was so very hot, and the hotel was brilliant, lovely an clean
and very friendly staff. The resort itself was good, with a beach
and a few tavernas and a ferry service to the mainland. Don't
listen to negative comments about Prinou it is a nice place! We
have also been to Kefalonia and Zante and Thassos beats these
for beauty and warmth from the locals."
From Barbara Zion, UK
31 Aug 2001 - "Just returned from a great
7 days at Skala Potamia. Weather was great, we stayed at Susie Studio.
Facilities good, I just hope someone shoots the cockrel that woke
me up at about 0400 every morning should we decide to go back there.
Husband enjoyed the food, I didn't, the Greeks don't cater too good
for a vegetarian who is not too keen on salads - oh well what did
I expect?
The beach was fantastic. Not the place to go if
you want a wild time though, and no ATMs at Skala Potamias, so make
sure you have cash. My only regret is that I couldn't get to Kastro
in the mountains. The tour guide said we would need a 4-wheel drive
to get there or drive to Theologos and do a long hike - couldn't
get the family interested. Does anyone have any info. The other
thing was, I wish I could have brought back the fantastic white
marble to do my kitchen counters in. It was beautiful."
From Ali and Simon Redmore, UK
30 Aug 2001 - "Just back from a fantastic
2 weeks, staying at Makryammos, near Thassos town. We really appreciated
the info from this site before going - thanks.
We recommend Makryammos, particularly for families.
We travelled around a bit, hiring a suzuki jeep for 3 days (the
offroading was dusty but fun); Albatross watersports at Pefkari
were great - especially the banana boat and the Ringos. We also
climbed Mount Ipsario on the path from Potamia - just over 3 hours
up and 2 hours down - and well worth it.
We didn't see that many mosquitos - but received
some very itchy bites from sandflies (look like UK thunderflies,
and tend to be active from about 4pm onwards, so insect-repellant
suncream would have been useful.)"
From Dave and Lynne, Sussex, UK
29 Aug 2001 - "Just returned from and excellent
7 days spent in Skala Potamias staying at the Aloe Studios. The
resort truly is a wonderful 'get-away-from-it-all' location. We
enjoyed a lovely stress-free week of eating, drinking and exploring.
A word of caution about the Aloe Studio's - The
kitchen facilities are very primative - our cooking equipment consisted
of the odd knife, fork and a kettle that didn't work - Oh, and there
was one pot as well - So don't expect to be preparing any meals!
The equipment looked like it had been purchased at a boot sale in
a hurry (for about a quid).
Eating out is wonderful though - we carried out
extensive research and tried them all. The best restaurant by a
long chalk was 'M Alexandros' which is situated amongst most of
the other eating places adjacent to the beach - The food there was
outstanding, the service first class and the bill always tiny -
I am not kidding when I say that the food was without doubt the
best I have ever encountered in any holiday location!!! It was streets
ahead of the neighbouring establishments (although they were all
okay). Go for the Greek Salad, Spaggetti Carbonara (scuse apelling),
Stuffed Tomatoes - you won't be dissapointed.
Would we go to Skala P again? Yes but we wouldn't
be staying at the Aloe.
If you do go - Do not under any circumstances book
through Lunn Polly Direct!!!!!! They couldn't run a winkle stall
- You have been warned." |
