From J.G.Nielsen, Denmark

10 May 2003 - "I have the hotel for you in Skala Prinos. It is The "Eleani", 500 m. west of the habour. It is very nice, 10 rooms with refrigirator and aircondition, near to the beach (50m), an with very nice people. The owner is Kristos Papakristos. Try to eat at taverna Papangelos, 500m west from the hotel, just upposite the camping. The very best on the island."

From Phil Yates, Greater Manchester, England

4 May 2003 - "My girlfriend and myself have been coming to Thassos for the last 5 years and have no desire to visit anywhere else. We now regard and infact refer to the island as "home" and are ex-pats just living in England. Having travelled all over Greece the island seems to have a certain magnetism that keeps calling you back. It was good to find yor web site which I will visit regularly now I have found it. Yassas!!"

From Ollie, Reading, England

1 May 2003 - "hi just like to say i recomend the vigli resturant and can u menstion my name under the restraunts praises"

From Diane George, Kent, England

1 May 2003 - "I am going back to Thassos(scala potamia)for my 4th time in June this year! So far i have stayed at the Kamelia (excellent!!) the Angelika (really nice but a tad noisy in the evenings) and this time at the Crystal Studios on the main front. Has anyone ever stayed at the crystal before? If so what is it like?? I absolutely love Thassos, its everything you need in a holiday, good food, good beach, great weather, really nice people, not packed out on the beach... only 8 weeks now til im back....Hurray!!!!!!"

From Diane, Somerset, England

30 Apr 2003 - "Hello Everyone, this is a great site certainly brings back some memories. We were in Thassos in June 1995 stayed at Susie Studios in Skala Potamia they were brand new & half the size they are now. We had a fantastic holiday, stunning mountain view from our studio (I will never forget that view!!) The resort was so laid back and the people were so friendly. We had little mopeds & we went all around the Island (we only just made it up that hill!!) We loved Skala Potamia wouldn't stay anywhere else on the Island. The beach going along towards Golden Beach was superb and the sea was the warmest I have ever been in absolutely fantastic. We have been to many different places in Greece since then but would love to come back as it sounds as if it's still relatively uncommercialised, hopefully we will return there next year."

From Shirley, Ashton under Lyne, England

27 Apr 2003 - "Hotel Aethria in Thassos Town is fantastic. We stayed at Hotel Korina (Skala Potamia) in 1997 - v. good - and last July at Aethria. Good sized rooms, air conditioning (bliss), great pool bar. fantastic pool and garden area, and so close to Thassos town itself. We want to go again next year with our grown up daughters and our young son."

From Peter, Lancashire, England

14 Apr 2003 - "Re; the query about Makryamos bungalows. We haven't stayed there, but always pay a couple of visits over the two weeks whilst on Thassos. It's almost like a small village, with 'chalets' scattered amongst the trees, and quite a large hotel complex next to the beach. Non - residents have to pay a small admission charge to get in, and then there is a charge for sunbeds (which includes high quality parasols). The sunbeds are laid out in exact lines parallel to the shore, which gives the place an air of Germanic fussiness. There is an excellent fish restaurant on the beach, and varied watersports, and also a swimming pool, which I believe is reserved for residents.

Fishing trips are available at Thassos harbour.

A lot of tour companies are posted on the hotel message board, (mainly non-English), and it seems to be popular with families with young children. Hope this is of help."

P.S. 15 Apr 2003 - "One drawback is that the location is somewhat isolated. I would definitely recommend car hire, you will need some sort of transport to get into Thassos, which is the nearest main town to you, (although there may be a 'shuttle'- they are not always convenient). But you must get out and see much more of this lovely island, and visit as many of the other towns and villages as you can during your stay."

From Carol & Roy Williamson, Bolton, England

6 Apr 2003 - "Thomai bar the most friendly bar in town and Vassali (I hope that is the right way to spell it) is a David Seaman look a like without the ponytail. We will be there in June and look forward to seeing you both"

From Linda Brewer, Hampshire, England

27 Mar 2003 - "With regard to Peter Drivers comments about maps, walks etc. The only walking guide I could find is called Walks in Northeast Thasos by Lance Chilton ISBN 190080249X revised last in 1998. Hope this helps. From Linda

Also to anyone who can help, what are the Aegean Sun Apartments in Skala Rachoni like?"

From Peter, Lancashire, England

25 Mar 2003 - "With reference to 'Viglis' Taverna, yes,- it's still there, at the end of Golden Beach. Probably one of the most extensive menus, with Italian and French influences, as well as the traditional Greek fare. Excellent food, and magnificent views of Scala Potomias Bay. Live entertainment most evenings, and we'll be back there again this June, can't wait!"

From Sarah Cook, West Yorks, England

24 Mar 2003 - "I now live in the village of potamia in Thassos, am just in England for a holiday. I run a bar with my Greek partner down in Skala Potamia. It's called COASTERS. We opened last year, but would like to see more custom please! We are close to thomai cafe, in a new building down on the seafront. We are nextdoor to the beachshop. We are open all day and until the early hours, everyone is welcome!"

From Sheila Prenderville, London, England

22 Mar 2003 - "Wow! How did I not discover this site before now? What a lot of useful information - we are returning to Thassos this year for the first time since 1990 (!) so expect a few changes! We stayed in Potos last time and will definitely try and get down there for a couple of days this year - we have booked the Dafni Studios in Thassos Town this time (Golden Sun - two weeks for £259 which is less than we paid in 1990 - I still have the receipt!) - haven't seen any mention of them on the site but haven't had time to take in all the info. yet! If anyone has any knowledge of Dafni we would be grateful to hear about it. Also - anyone who has been to Potos recentely - do you know whether Margarita's bar is still there - we made friends with Yiannis and his wife on our last visit and it would be great to see them again. Also remember a lovely taverna up some steps at the end of Golden Beach and from reading various info. on the island we think it might be Viglis - could anyo! ne who knows it put a short description on here so we can see if we're right about that. So looking forward to our return visit - and thanks, everyone, for all this information."

From Stuart Miller, Kent, England

21 Feb 2003 - "My good friend Alex, who runs the Megas Alexandros taberna in Skala Potamia sent me an email this week telling me that his hotel should be open for business this summer. It is called Sousanna and can be found in the Sunworld brochure. He said last summer that he would be installing "English" plumbing - so no little bins in the bathroom. It is back off the road to Golden Beach.

Several inches of snow have fallen just lately on the island. It is really strange seeing photos of the beach at Skala Potamia with a snowman on it!"

From Carol & Roy Williamson, Bolton, England

2 Feb 2003 - "this will be our 5th time in Scala Potimia we have no wish to every go anywhere else now, the people are absolutely lovely and very obliging. we tend to keep to 2 eating places they are Korellis and Alexandros, we find they food delicious and the staff great. we always stay at the nefali appartments, we have found them to be the cleanest we have every come accross and a very pleasent view from the balconies. looking forward to our next visit in June and look forward to renewing old friendships"

From Ron Saunders, Cheshire, England

27 Jan 2003 - "I went to Thassos 2 yrs ago (01) for a fortnight and stayed at the Fedra on Golden Beach. At the time I thought what a neglected part of the world this is,nothing to do except swat away the giant mozzies and keep away from the dive bombing superwasps. After a couple of days i felt there was a change in me,something felt different somehow. I wasnt picking arguments with my wife or whinging at every little thing.Hell !! I was even laughing a lot more.Another day passed when i found The Aquarius Bar (Daves). I thought what a pokey little shed this is. No room to swing a cat. I'll give it a try. The hospitality was great, the music was great (you can get to choose your own). The drink was very reasonably priced. Dave bought me as many drinks as i did him. Thats no way to make a profit? It also had the best toilets on the island. At this point I realised what was causing the change in me (and my wife) There was no STRESS, i was stressless. Something I can't remember happening before.

Needless to say it came back as soon as i boarded the aircraft home.I have just retired so i need somewhere to totally unwind.Ive had a few holidays at various places since none of them gave me the same feeling of wellbeing that Thassos had. So 2 hrs ago i logged on to Thomas Cook.com and booked 2 weeks in May .Dave get those beers lined up and the CDs out i'm coming back. Bye for now Ron.

From Catherine Salt, Lancs., England

23 Jan 2003 - "I visited Thassos in 2000, staying at the Glyfada Apartments just outside Thassos town. The apartments were lovely, having sea views, and the family who owned them were extremely friendly. I was on holiday alone that year, but that was no problem, everyone was so friendly and I felt quite safe. I visited quite a few of the tavernas in Thassos town and every one served lovely food. Most days I got the ferry over to Golden Beach which was nice and quiet with a few tavernas which were all good. Thassos is ideal for a relaxing holiday, it is a typical unspoilt uncommercialised Greek island and I would not hesitate to return there in the future."

From Glenn, Sarah and Matthew Taylor, West Yorkshire, England

2 Jan 2003 - "Came to Thassos for the first time in 1997 and have never holidyated anywhere else. We stay in Limenaria and have made some fantastic friends over there. In August 2002 stayed at The Vana Studios next to the dry riverbed. They were clean and the owners friendly. For anyone travelling to Limenaria, you must eat at Kafe Pelekanos where Yiorgo only offers chicken soup or spaghetti but it's the best you'll ever taste. Also find Captain Yiannis in a little side street where the food is great and exceptionally cheap. Vythos Bar on the front has very friendly owners Dimitri and Tania who will make you feel very welcome. I can guarantee you will not be disappointed in Thassos, it's a great place to unwind and you really don't ever want to go home.

Enjoy!"

From David Ogden, Cheshire, England

15 Nov 2002 - "Great site! we love Thassos and have been many times We recomend the pigi taverna in the square at Thassos town. Also everyone must say hello to Costas at the old harbour!! Thanks again See You In Thassos."

From Gareth and Anita, Lancashire, UK

1 Nov 2002 - "Just a quick word to say how good a time i had in Thassos,Scala potamias. I would recommend it to anybody i know. And if you read this (stellios or sarah),thanks for your hospitality. was it the blue bar !ha ha No it was coasters what a great bar. See you all soon."

From Alan Rowe, Devon, Englan

1 Nov 2002 - "I have been going to Thassos for nearly 20 years, and have spent 4 summers there working in various bars, and I am afraid to say I was even a rep there many moons ago. Here are a list of my favourite bars and Tavernas in Thassos Town (Limenas) I hope they will be of use to you . . . . .

From Helen Sampson, Cheshire, UK

29 Oct 2002 - "Louloudi apartments Skala Rachoni. We first stayed here on our honeymoon 8 yrs ago when Thassos was a virtual unknown. Since then we have been back another 5 times and 1 year took 8 other people with us! The place is absolutely beautiful, the apts spotless and the hosts were like part of the family. One year we even had Christmas cards. We are hoping to return this year with our children.!!"

From Ian and Ginny, Kent, UK

17 Oct 2002 - "If you are looking to find unspoilt Greece you canāt go wrong with Thassos. Although you should check the rainfall in May as a heavy rain washes away most of the wasp eggs - a little local knowledge goes a long way. (Saying that don't be put off as it is the most beautiful Island).

Thassos Island is absolutely beautiful with its unspoilt sandy coastline made up of . . . . .

From Sarah, West Sussex, UK

11 Oct 2002 - "Just returned from Thassos, Iannois Hotel in Golden Beach - superb! what a week!! Weather ropey as was now the last week of the season but the place if fanatstic - great scenery, beaches to find where you can spend hours daydreaming and great bars to find, particularly Dave's bar in Golden Beach which is a favourite with the locals, ask him to play whatever music you like and if you are lucky you can see the locals fire dancing - quite an experience... cant wait to go back next year, in the summer season...and as a lively 29year old i had a great time!"

From Sarah Jackson, Sheffield, UK

9 Oct 2002 - "We came back from Thassos last week after spending 1 week in Skala Potamia. Appart from the terrible weather for most of the week we had an excellent time. When the thunder storms passed it was very hot and sunny and there was certainly plenty to do and see.

We had been warned that wasps are a big problem, but appart from being a slight nuisance, they never caused us any real problems. They never bothered us in the tavernas whoch certainly was a bonus!

We found that Skala Potamia was the nicest of the resourts around the island, with the best variety of places to eat and drink. Although Aliki,a small habitation further round the island, was a close second with its fabulous sheltered bay and marble headland. We found that car hire was easy and painless, and there are loads of places to try. However, these range in price quite considerably, but Potos cars and Smart cars are definatley the cheapest.

We had a really great time and saw alot in a short space of time. Now we need to come back when the weather is a bit better!"

From Steve Marchant, West Midlands, UK

27 Sep 2002 - "Nautilus Taverna at Skala Potamias. Run by Katerina and Kostas who welcome all visitors so warmly. Food is excellent and the prices are reasonable. The fresh fish is 1st class and the beef stifado I rate the best. If you visit, do not be put off by the appearance of the place as the food and service is what counts. Visited September 2002."

From Alan Rowe, UK

27 Sep 2002 - "I have been travelling to Thassos independently since 1985 and believe me it is a lot easier now than it was then. In those days you had to fly to Thessaloniki and make your way to kavala either by taxi or bus, and on getting to kavala you would have to catch the flying dolphin to Thassos.

Now with the arrival of major tour companies it is easier, you can fly directly to Kavala airport on a chartered flight which you can usually find on the internet. ( These flights are available from May until Mid October) On arriving at Kavala airport it is easy to get a taxi to the ferry port of Keramoti, this will cost around 9 euro's and takes about 10 minutes. The ferries run frequently and as a foot passenger it will cost you less than £1.00.

There are plenty of rooms available in Limenas (Thassos town) and the only time that it may be difficult to find one is between the last week of July and the first 2 weeks of August leading up to Panagia day. This year I was told that something like 72000 people arrived on the Island in the days leading up to Panagia day and some 20000 cars (Panagia day is around 15/16th of August I am not completely sure) not including foreign tourists. The rooms are basic but clean and most have there own shower expect to pay 20 euro's a night for a room but this is per room not per person.

I have travelled to Thassos from the U.K in the Winter this involves getting a scheduled flight from Heathrow to Athens and catching a connecting flight to Kavala. Last time I flew with Olympic and it cost around £250 for the return flights and there was very little hanging around in Athens about 1 hour before you caught the onward flight.

Thassos is a great place and I have lost count of the amount of times I have visited Thassos go on do your self a favour and give it a go."

From Peter & Janet, Lancashire, England

27 Sep 2002 - "My wife and I visited Thassos (Skala Potomias) in July this year (our third time in four years), like many others, we were apprehensive as to whether it would be spoilt by over-development or commercialisation. Happy to report it's still as beautiful as ever. This time we stayed at the Aliston Studios for the first time, and had a wonderful time. There was some building work going on next door, but have to disagree with a comment on this website, the building workers NEVER started work before 8.30a.m.-at least not whilst we were there, and it certainly was not intrusive enough to spoil our holiday, (and other guests didn't seem unduly bothered).Everyone spoke very highly of the owner (Tanassos), who was very friendly and helpful. One correspondent on this site suggests that he expected children to play in silence, but I suppose the difference between exuberant enjoyment and unruly behaviour will always be open to interpretation. He certainly seemed tolerant of the kids who were there during our stay.

I am becoming quite reluctant to recommend Thassos to anyone else, as I have just booked for next June, and managed to get 1 of the only 2 remaining apartments. Also, every one of our friends who has visited, (following our glowing reports), have ALL fell in love with the place and are also returning next year, I think we should all now decide to keep it secret. Finally, I was very pleasantly surprised to note that the introduction of the Euro, did not result in the scandalous 'price hikes' that have occurred in Spain & Tenerife. This perhaps reflects the genuine nature of the Island and its' people. Long may it be so."

From nicola morgan, west glamorgan, wales

25 Sep 2002 - "i seemed to be expecting a damn sight more of Thassos, than i got, i've just returned after 1 week of ...........................absolutely nothing, the only good point i can mention is that our hotel was spotlessly clean, many bad points, 1000's of wasps, 1000's of cats, rude locals, and we were dumped in the middle of nowhere, so i suggest that you really have a good think, before you visit this place."

From stewart richardson, nottingham, UK

24 Sep 2002 - "We have been to thassos three times and stayed at Scala Potomias the three times.Last time staying at susie studios which we found to be super also eating out at the akrogiali we found to be very relaxing. We have been going to greece for the last 18 years other than stoupa in the mani this is the place for us back in 2003."

From Mike & Pat Walsh, Lancs, UK

24 Sep 2002 - "Just got back from Thassos today after a wonderful relaxing holiday. We went independently and took 'potluck' as to where we would stay. We had no problem at all in getting from the airport to the ferry (taxi 9 euro) and 2.75 euro got us over to the island. We were intending to stay in Thassos town as this seemed easier but in the end we took the bus down to Limeneria as we were told this was lovely. We rolled up at the Anna Beach hotel and had a sea front studio which was spotlessly clean and the owners were very welcoming indeed. As this was our first holiday without our three children we just wanted to realax and do nothing and Thassos is definitely the Island for that. We hired a car for three days from Potos 65 euro - very cheap and drove around the whole island finding little beaches to sleep on each day. We will definitely go back - by the way there were no wasps in Limenaria at all - they seemed to congegate around Thassos town Scala Potamia and Golden beach! in particular.

Before we went we read all the comments on this site and found it to be invaluable information - I hope we can provide some more for would be travellers."

From stuart miller, kent, England

24 Sep 2002 - "We paid our sixth visit to Thassos on September 10th (the second time this year) and stayed for a week at the Aloe in Skala Potamia.

Having been brave enough to travel independently of the tour operators in May, we decided to repeat the exercise. . . . . .

From Lindsay, west yorkshire, England

20 Sep 2002 - "Last year I worked and lived in Thassos in three of the resorts Thassos town,Golden Beach and Scala Potamia, me and a friend worked in a bar called milos in thassos town but lived and spent alot of the time in scala potamia you seem to learn alot more about Thassos when you actually stay there for a long period of time! the good and bad. But I have to say some of the nicest good hearted people seem to live there. One of the best places to eat is the Fedra in Golden beach and they are really nice people, also I would recomend a bar called mandagoras ( possibley spelt incorrect) not only is it good in summer but in the colder months they have a fire and also for the people that like to stay up late well actually go out when the greeks do there is a nightclub called Milos hiden down a dirt track in Scala Potamia and a 100% greel club called la Scala but this can prove to be difficult to get to and back unless you arrange with the taxi driver or have access to free rides on bikes. !

The main thing I learnt about Thassos is greeks do not go out till 11:00/12:00 at night and the entertainment on the beaches is fantastic to sum it up it is a beutifull inviting island with many hidden treasures and greek like you have never seen before I would like to recomend it but the other good thing about it is, it is not over busy not too many english people to spoil the atmosphere it's greek perfect and simple greek. P.S anybody that feels stressed I can guarentee you will come home and feel totally refreshed saying siga siga (slowly slowly ).

Hope to se the Island again very Shortly"

From tracey and geoff, hull, UK

20 Sep 2002 - "went to scala potamia last september going back september 26th 2002 can i say a big thankyou to vasalis and his wife owners of thomais bar for making our holiday and joshuas birthday very special see you on the 26th of september also a mention to the owners of the athrion studios lovely place staying there again this year."

From Roger & Carol, Glos, England

19 Sep 2002 - "Just returned from Thassos (Golden Beach) after our fourth trip in 2 years. We did May/June this year (and last year), and also did September last year.

All in all each time we have had nice relaxing holidays (midnight clip cloppers & door bangers apart ! ), and of all of the places we have stayed strongly recommend the Nostos Studios. Roomy, spotless and the owners are first class. As regards Tavernas we didnt stray far away from the Fedra, mainly because for various reasons we didnt enjoy any of the others!.

The people that run the new Taverna (Akrogiari?) would do well to realise that people do not appreciate being propositioned as you walk past. We did try it one night and found the food OK.

Perhaps the only things that make this idyll not quite 100% over the 4 visits are a) the weather - everyday either starts or ends with cloud. b) WASPS !!!!!!

It really is picture postcard stuff if you ignore the scrubby bits, and the Island is remarkable. High spots being Alikes, the Monastery, Panagia and some of the views on the east coast (by Kinera (rabbit Island)).

The world is a big place and this is the first time we have ever been back to the same place, so you can tell. But we are determined to try somewhere else next year (possibly Skala in Kefalonia)."

From Pauline & Andy, York, UK

13 Sep 2002 - "We returned yesterday from our second holiday in succession in Scala Potamias. Despite the wasps (which were worse last October) and the biting insects we had another wonderful holiday. We stayed at Pontius Apartments this year and can not recommend it too highly, particularly the fantastic view of the bay. The owners are very friendly and their assorted livestock (including a donkey who loves posing for cameras) very entertaining. This year we decided to visit Kavala on the mainland but were rather disappointed by the new part of the city, although the castle and old district were very interesting.

It's not surprising that you meet many Britons who now live on Thassos, quite simply it's paradise!"

From Carolyn, Martin and Lawrence Bachell, Dorset, England

31 Aug 2002 - "We have just returned [ 28 August ] from a week on the island of Thassos and had a brilliant time.[I notice that most of the feedback is from visitors to Skala Potomias.]We stayed at Thassos town at the Villa Eden, and although the room was basic, as are all rooms in Greece, we were situated in lovely gardens . . . . . . .

The whole of the Bachell's message can be found if you follow this link - a new browser page will open, leaving this one for your return.

From Mick & Tracey, Wakefield, West York's, UK

29 Aug 2002 - "Arrived home on 20th August having been to the island two years running, staying in Limenas both times. I found the weather and conditions quite a contrast. Red hot bright sunshine all daylight hours last year & hazy sun-cloud + bright hot sunshine interspersed with the odd storm this year.

This is NOT a complaint, the only annoying thing I came across was the mass of English people moaning about the weather! How can an average of 32c be that bad? (Everyone got tanned). The hospitality of everyone we met was again superb and we were amazed by the amount of people who remembered us from last year. Only 48wks & 5 days till we find out if they'll still remember us in 2003!"

From Jane, Ian and Jack Simpson, Hampshire, UK

28 Aug 2002 - "We arrived back from Thassos on 27th August. Spent 2 weeks at the Dionysus Hotel in Golden Beach. The hotel was great, fantastic views and VERY clean. It was nice to have a pool as we found the beaches to be dirty and did not enjoy the ever growing mountains of fag ends deposited in the sand. We went to Aliki beach and spent a good day there . . . . .
