7 July 2003 - "2 weeks to go and can't wait!
This will be our 5th time to Thassos & WE LOVE it. Like so many
we return to the same apartments in Trypiti because of the friendliness
of the people, which you encounter all over the island. There aren't
many places where you can say you feel completely safe and can't
leave hire car keys on top of an outside fridge for someone to collect
the next day, we have to alarm etc. If our numbers came up we would
buy property there. This year we have already pre-booked our hire
car from Speedy cars off the internet, with the price of 38 euros
a day for a Suzuki Jimny which for the main weeks is very competitive,
so look forward to spending more time inland this holiday - anyone
know of where the inland pool is? We will also try more of the restaurants
that have been mentioned on this website in Limenas and Scala Potamia.
We love the beaches Alyki, Paradise, Trypiti and Pachis also. The
only problem I have is that I have a phobia of wasps!! not ideal
I know but that is how much I enjoy Thassos!.......So roll on the
23rd Sunset Apts, Limenaria!!"
From Eleni Kyriakou, Thessaloniki, Greece
7 July 2003 - "I'm glad to read all these
nice comments about our Island, Thassos. It's true that greek
national tourism organization doen't promote it very much. It
preferes to promote & advertise others islands.
I hope you and more and more come and visit our
beautiful island!"
From mihai iovanescu, romania
5 July 2003 - "i was in Thassos (Kinira) it
was nice, i stay at vilas Ianis cross the street with vila Roula.I
was at Aliki beach, was nice, i pass from Potos, Limenaria. I hope
i came in Thassos next year."
From Peter Svensson, Stockholm, Sweden
3 July 2003 - "Hi Thassos lovers. I just
wanted to tell you all about a Taverna in Thassos town called
Syrtaki, i had a couple of dinners there, wonderful atmosphere,
lovely food and great staff. Enjoy"
From Kim and Andy, Herefordshire, UK
3 July 2003 - "We have just returned from
a fabulous week in Thassos. We stayed at the Makryammos Bungalows
and found them to be excellent.
The island is just amazing with the fantastic beaches,
clear sea and backdrop of mountains. I would definately recommend
the Makryammos Bungalows, the accomodation was very clean, the food
great, buffet breakfast of crepes, cooked breakfast, cheeses, ham,
bread, cereal, fresh melons, yoghurt etc! Great if you have kids.
The evening meals were also good with again a buffet. We went B&B
and also tried Tavernas in Thassos Town and Panagia, we didn't have
one bad meal. The beach at Makryammos is lovely and clean the sea
is very shallow here and on alot of the beaches, at Makryammos you
can hire umbrellas and sunbeds (7 euros a day) the pool is also
quite large and clean. You also get one hours free pedaloe hire
a day and the taxi boat goes in the morning to Thassos Town or Golden
Beach, it is best to get a taxi back to the resort as the buses
don't seem to run very often to Makryammos (Taxi 4 Euros from Thassos
town to the resort). But if you go to Thassos you must hire a car
and get out to the other beaches, our favs were Paradise, Golden
Beach, Trypti and Aliki, you ca! n also find some really quite little
coves if you have a car (however 4 wheel drive would be best to
do this as you have to negotiate some very bumpy tracks down to
these beaches) All in all a great time, the kids loved the sea and
beaches, the greeks very friendly and we will return in the future.
Next time we will hire a 4x4 and explore into the
mountains."
From Matthew Jones, Mid Glamorgan South Wales,
UK
3 July 2003 - "My fiance & myself spend
2 glorious weeks at the Emerald Apartments (JMC) Golden Beach,
The apartments are very basic but clean, but there's a very steep
hill, to get there. Golden beach is great, nice beach. The Bus
service is good, and proves to be a very cheap way to get to Thassos
Town (2.20 euros), good selection of shops and resturaunts can
be found in Thassos Town. Back to Golden Beach, 2 shops (selling
anything from suntan lotion to food/(fresh)fruit, a few placing
to eat - the best is Vigilis, good food (good value), and the
view is outstanding. Thassos is a great place, but don't expect
to go clubbing Were going Thassos again this year, I cannot wait."
From J Bruce, West Midlands, UK
30 June 2003 - "We stayed for two weeks
at the Calypso Hotel at Skala Prinou 2 years ago. It was a late
deal and to say we were apprehensive was an understatement! Only
reports we could find of the place were negative - HOW WRONG!
It was wonderful! It's the only Greek island (and we've done a
few) that you could walk from the hotel and be on the near empty
beach in 2 minutes flat! When our 8 year old contracted and ear
infection they couldn't help and care enough. A lovely place!"
From Vanessa & Phil Clarke, Cumbria, UK
29 June 2003 - "We returned on 18th June after
a wonderful 2 week holiday in Thassos Town.We stayed at the Villa
Lina (Thomas Cook) and although the room was small, basic and kitchen
poorly equipped, the lovely well-kept gardens, pool and bar area
made up for this. We hired a Suzuki Jimny for 10 days for 250 Euro

26 June 2003 - "We have just returned from
a two week holiday in Scala Potamia at the Nama apartments. We selected
the holiday based upon all of the positive comments about Thassos
on your website. The reality proved to be even better than we expected.
The weather was wonderful and the Nama apartments although built
in the 70's have been recently refurbished to a high standard. We
even got a shower curtain which is a rarity in Greece.
We used many of the tavernas recommended on your
website and a special mention must be given again to Viglis and
CJ's. For a little variety we also found the only 'Italian' run
be a Greek couple which was excellent. The place was busier than
we expected (we went over a Greek Bank holiday period) with over
40 tavernas in the Town. According to the locals we even had a visit
to the beach from George Bush senior during our stay.
It is the best holiday we have had and will be
returning. Fabulous views (a mountain as high as Snowdon), lovely
people, excellent apartment and a safe sandy beach. We did not suffer
from wasps but mosquitos were a nightmare - they even got us on
the plane coming home. Our advice to anyone is to go to Scala Potamia
but take plenty of Mossie spray.
Thanks again for an extremely informative website
- we'll certainly go back there again."
From Pat Widdowson, Manchester, UK
25 June 2003 - "We have just returned from
Thassos 19th June, they were the most relaxing 2 weeks we have
ever had. We stayed at the Villa Dafni apartments outside of Thassos
town. Highly recommended accommodation, Ellen and Vasilis the
owners were very friendly and helpful, lovely pool and pool bar
and good bar snacks. We dined at quite a few restaurants, I think
Zodiak came out on top, excellent steaks and salmon with dill
sauce just delicious. Remezo's bar in the harbour was lovely to
sit and relax in an evening before going to eat. Lovely holiday
and lovely people."
From Sue, West Sussex, UK
19 June 2003 - "We had a wonderful time on
our first visit to Thassos staying at the Souzanna Studios in Skala
Potamia. These brand new studios are a stones throw from the beach
and the centre of the village. Set amongst olive groves with the
mountains looming up providing a very scenic backdrop, makes for
a very peaceful and relaxing location. The owner Alex, also runs
one of the tavernas in the village, 'Megas Alexandros' where you
will be assured of a very warm welcome and some really great food.
Back at the studios, Tasos keeps the drinks coming as long as you're
around.
Another one of our favourite restaurants was the
Akriogali, situated on the beach about 400m away from the main drag.
Perhaps the prettiest restaurant of all, blue and white with lots
of gloriously coloured flowering plants in containers outside. None
of your greasy mass produced Moussaka in this resort, all freshly
made and served in earthenware pots.
Don't bother with Eric's bar unless you want to
be ripped off. His prices are extortionate and he plays wildly on
his resemblance to footballer Eric Cantana. The only time his bar
is busy is when the footie is on. You don't need his heated swimming
pool, the sea is great at the moment, and all of the local hotels
that have pools welcome you provided that you buy a drink or two
whilst you're there. Went up to the Vigli in golden beach for a
meal. Very disappointing, but great to go up there for a drink just
to take in the breathtaking view.
We will definately be returning to Thassos, hopefully
later this year."
From Alan & Margaret Kitching, Teesside, UK
18 June 2003 - "Just returned home after
13th visit to Skala Potamia staying at the Aloe apartments with
Stuart & Helen Miller. Terrific weather, between 34 & 39 degrees
every day. The highlight had to be spending 3 days up in the mountains
using a 4 wheel drive vehicle -the views were fantistic from Mt
Ipsario and Kastro has a small taberna now (try the home made
goats cheese- delicious)
While driving round the coast road, after rescuing
a small tortoise from beig flattened, stopped off at the the Boomerang
bar in Potos, as recommended, excellent beer and hospitality.
As usual called in the old harbour at Remezzo's for a tuna jacket
potato, very tasty.
In Skala Potamia as usual the Megas Alexandros
taberna was up to his own high standards with bigger range of
Greek food, with both Alex & Demetris still full of fun. If fresh
fish is your thing you must try the Akrogiali and chat to Manolis
about Olympiakos and Man utd. After your meal stroll down to the
Votsala and have a coffee with Smarro then pop next door to the
Kronos bar and have a Metaxa with Smarro's husband Vasilis. Due
to the excessive temperature of the sand, the 4 'wrinklies' had
to curtail their boulles activities, mayby next year!
On a slight downside, it has to be that there
a lot more traffic on the ring road now with the accompanying
noise that goes with it - still thats progress but all in allwe
all had a great hol and no doubt will be back next year"
From Jim & Holly Jarrad, West Sussex, UK
17 June 2003 - "My husband and I have just
returned from spending two weeks at Golden Beach in Thassos. We
stayed at the Dionysus Hotel which I do believe was one of the best
Hotels in Golden Beach, the view was literally out of this world

15 June 2003 - "Been to Thassos 8 times love
it so much have got land there, Konstantinos apartments are great,
Villa Filaktos is also great, Narajvo bar at end of Limenaria town
just great, Yiannis and Katrina lovely couple. Thalassies bar with
Manuella and Vasso waitresses great company, Kostis restuarant fantastic
so is the one next door (sorry can't spell name) but you sit upstairs.
Hire a car from Speedy great value!!! If you visit Potos (This is
where we are building our apartments) visit the Boomerang bar with
Joe and Abe, 2 brothers of Australian descent, dad Alex, great man.
Go to the Zooom bar for a super meal see Big Bob and Nicola from
Birmingham she went there for a holiday and stayed. The Island is
magical you won't want to leave it. Going back June 25th for 2 weeks,
can't wait!!!! hope to see some of you there, come for a drink in
the Thalassies bar"
From Margaret and Patrick Joyce, Lancashire,
UK
15 June 2003 - "We have just returned from
our third trip to Thassos staying in Thassos Town. We have visited
all other resorts on the island and all are lovely. We would recommend
The Zodiac steak house/restaurant for an excellent meal and warm
welcome. For a relaxing drink in a beautiful setting try the Remezo
bar by the harbour. Potos car rental are very helpful with reasonable
rates. We can't wait to return to our favourite Greek Island."
From mike duffy, Bristol, UK
14 June 2003 - "Whilst visiting the beautiful
Island of Thassos last week, I came across a wonderful bar called
the 'sun and the moon' run by English people it is a very friendly
place and very near golden beach which is a lovely part of the
island, just up beyond scala potamia, also a great place for guidance
and advice. You must try the cocktails."
From Jasmine & Vicky, Warwickshire, UK
14 June 2003 - "We have just returned from
two weeks in Thassos. We stayed at the Filipidis Apts in Golden
Beach. The beach was beautiful the nicest we found on the island.
It was a very quiet resort but we think that it won't be for that
long. There are many tavernas in the area we particularly recommend
Fedra. The food was delicious and all the staff were very friendly.
They didn't rush you and would have time to chat with all the customers
individually! The weather was lovely and reached very high temperatures.
The bus service on the island is extremely cheap 2.20Euro return
from Golden Beach to Thassos town. We only explored the eastern
side of the island including Aliki and would go back to explore
the other side. We would recommend this holiday to couples and families
and young people that don't want to party all night long. The island
of Thassos is truly a "garden in the Aegean"
From Tracey and Richard, Wiltshire, UK
13 June 2003 - "arrived back late last night,
stayed at Skala Potomia at the Kastro studios, very nice but not
big enough if you have a child, the owner Costa owns the Nautalous
resturant on the front and him & his wife are lovely, you could
not meet nicer friendly greeks, the food there is a must, the
resot is fantastic and is not yet built up like some resorts,
the Korina hotel is a must if you dont have a pool the owners
are Sophia and Demitries a young coouple who hospatality is great
there is something for everyone and I would certainly stay there
if I went again, the pool is the largest on the island. The weather
was fantastic about 35 degrees or more every day, we hired a car
and recommend a drive around theisland, we could not believe some
of the beaches it was like being on a tropical island white sand
and blue seas, a brillant holiday if you want somewhere quiet
and relaxing away from it all."
From Stewart & Lynn, Sheffield, Yorkshire
11 June 2003 - "We arrived back on the 5th
June after 14 days on what was our 4th visit to Thassos in the last
4 years, we have stayed in the same resort, same studio on every
occasion and we simply love the place. Things have changed somewhat
since our first visit and we think there are a few danger signs
starting to appear. The track to the Athrion has been tarmaced which
to some may seem like a step forward but not to Lynn and me, the
young lads are really hammering their fast cars up the road at frightening
speeds and the traffic noise has increased as you would expect,
to our way of thinking the essence of the place will be destroyed
if the policy to lay tarmac and build walkways down the seafront
are continued.
The Taverna's within the resort and around the
island are to our way of thinking all top notch the food is simply
superb, but if i had to reccommend any it would be the Magic Coast
, and the Captains Table the fish soup is to die for as is the grilled
octopus.
We would not want to put anybody off visiting Thassos
but we wouldent be honest if we did not mention the jump in prices
over the last couple of years, we used to come to Potamia and hardly
took any notice of the prices but 5.5 euro's for a matini and lemonade
(£3.85p ) and just a normal measure at that, we paid 7.5 euro's
at the supermarket for a litre bottle, so be prepared its not cheap
any more, having said that we will be back next year.
Great site most informative and keeps us in touch
with our bit of paradise. Stewart & Lynn"
From Elaine and Stuart, Huddersfield, UK
8 June 2003 - "Last August 2002 we visited
Thassos for the first time staying at the Villa Eden, Thassos
town which was very basic. Whilst there we went for a meal at
the Louloudis apartments, Skala Rachoni and were invited to a
barbacue with the guests. We were made so welcome by the owners
Sotiria, George and their 2 daughters that on return home we booked
immediately to stay there. The place is very clean and the guests
are treated like family. A bonus is that it is near the best beach
we found on the Island which for obvious reasons we are keeping
secret. We recommend for eating places Pigi's in Thassos Town
and Krambousa in Skala Potamia and also Remezzo's on the harbour
side at Thassos town for light lunches. Potos car hire seemed
to be best value for car hire."
From Andy Collins, Leicestershire, UK
8 June 2003 - "Having thoroughly enjoyed my
stay on the island of Thassos (May 2003), I felt I should provide
some feedback since your site was so helpful when planning my trip.
I stayed at the Anna Beach (Vythos Bar) in Limenaria.
Apartment was immaculate with all mod cons, including electric kettle,
TV, radio, hair dryer, high shower fitting and shower curtain! Full
marks to Dimitri and Tanya who make their guests extremely welcome.
Super location by the beach (free loungers for guests) as well as
a nice little pool (cold water in May though!). Also, good value
English breakfast.
I tried three of the restaurants you list. The
best was probably Asterias - not 'traditional Greek taverna', but
super food (great swordfish & pork chops) and friendly service.
Mouragios was fine (free desert). Kostis is more traditional - used
by the locals - another good meal. I also tried George's Taverna
- nice traditional atmosphere (up steps opposite the taxi rank -
with the tree though the roof).
For beer choice, go to the Anonymous Cafe or adjoining
Full Moon Bar in Thassos Town - nice range of continental beers,
including Budvar - as well the local stuff.
The island is very attractive, with friendly people
and superb scenery and mountain villages. Had the weather been better
(we brought the rain with us) it would have been a perfect week!"
From Elizabeth Bellingham, Wolverhampton, UK
6 June 2003 - "Arrived home from Thassos yesterday
after staying in the new Souzanna apartments. They are brilliant,
Alex and Tasos really look after you. It was great to see all our
friends again, it makes it harder to leave each time. Roll on next
May!"
From Elena, Finland
6 June 2003 - "Greetings from sunny Thassos,
just got back last night and had a beautiful week loitering around
Limenaria and Potos. Best beach around there is Tripiti which
is about 2km west from Limenaria and there is a bar also and about
3pm everyday the local boys come to play beach wolley, which is
nice :)"
From jane & richard brown, june& chris, sheffield,
England
4 June 2003 - "we gave Remezzo's on the harbour
a try and ended up there nearly every night for a fortnight!! not
the cheapest drinks in town, but the atmosphere is by far the best.Sulis
& Nik your hosts are very friendly and make everyone very welcome.
Well worth a visit."
From Sonya and Michael O'Mara, Merseyside, England
3 June 2003 - "Returned from our 1st visit
to Thassos on Sunday and are already trying to arrange another
visit the island was beautiful and very relaxing, we stayed at
the Semeli studios in Skala Potamias with Thomson and were pleasantly
surprised very clean, well equipped and situated on the beach
front. All of the meals we had in the taverna's were lovely but
we especially liked Captains for the steak and shrimps. Wasp's/bee's
were not a big problem. Must visit Eric's bar and see the Cantona
look a like he's very friendly."
From Angela Gordon, Flintshire, North Wales
30 May 2003 - "I returned home from the Island
of Thassos on 29th May 2003. I have visited many Greek Islands and
this is by far the most beautiful I have seen so far. I highly recomend
staying at The brand new Souzanna Apartments in Scala Potamia.
The rooms are spacious and very tastefully thoughtout
and the staff are extremely friendly. I usually always go away self
catering, this holiday was booked last minute and the photo was
not yet in the brochure so we were quite apprehensive. What a shock
I had at the luxury. Outstanding to say the least. Try the bar menus
tuna salad its yum! Will be returning vey soon."
From John & Louise Jarman, Nottinghamshire,
England
28 May 2003 - "Just returned from a week
in Thassos staying at the Anastasia Studios in Golden Beach, which
were spacious, clean & bright. Lovely island, especially Alyki.
We can recommend eating at Finikas in Golden Beach, excellent
food and friendly service.
We hired a "Jimny" from Potos in Skala Potamia
(also recommended). This is great for exporing the dirt roads
in the mountains and for reaching Paradise Beach. No problem at
all with the wasps/bees, we think the torrential rain and thunder
put them off! Did spot lots of small frogs, one large toad, a
green lizard and a long, olive brown (harmless we were told) snake."
From Stuart Miller, Kent, UK
26 May 2003 - "With reference to Linda Brewer's
communication on 27 March - we have, for many years, been using
a walking guide entitled "Walking on Thassos" by Truus van de Mast
and Roos Gruwel. Troos was born in Hilversum, but has lived on Thassos
since 1987. Roos is also Dutch and has also lived on the island
for the same time. Both are teachers. Roos is a nature guide for
the Dutch Nature organisation on Thassos. We bought it at the Thomson
office when it was next door to the Votsalo snack bar (several years
ago). It may still be available in the Thomson office now in Thassos
Town. It has a distinctive green cover with a map of the island
and a pair of walking boots on the cover.
The book describes 11 different walks, all of differing
difficulty mostly from the areas around Limenas (Thassos Town),
Panagia, Potamia and Golden Beach. There is also one from Maries.
We used it to find Vathi Beach which is where the Lazy Day cruise
stops for its barbeque. It's lovely - especially when it's deserted.
Each walk is very well described with photographs, maps and diagrams
that are very helpful. It also contains valuable hints and tips
and information about nature on Thassos.
Even if you don't like walking, it's a very handy
guide if you want to go off-roading. If you can find it, I would
thoroughly recommend it.
Only 6 more days (and counting) until we use it
again!"
From Alan & Pam Dean, N W Leics, England
26 May 2003 - "Spent a V enjoyable time, last
week, at the immaculate NOSTOS Studios, golden beach. Pleased to
announce that, due to the Spectacular Thunderstorm & torrential
rain, most of the Wasps eggs have been destroyed. However, I did
turn abit red. Even my wife swam in the sea,so it was OK, temp.
wise. Beautiful island & people. Not yet littered with american
fast food wrappers. . . Keep 'em out! We didn't experience any loud
vexatious people, so if you're one,go somewhere else."
From Debbie Knocks, Yorkshire, England
24 May 2003 - "I spent a wonderful two weeks
in Thassos and loved every minute of it. Lovely beaches all around
and some great night life in Thassos Town. Don't miss the Zodiac
restaurant for a wonderful meal and friendly service, usually
a short wait is needed but it is well worth it."
From Alan Kitching, Teeside, England
24 May 2003 - "My wife and I have visited
Skala Potamia 13 times over the last10 years and have made a lot
of friends not only the local Greeks but serial English visitors
as well. Stuart and Helen Miller, who is a regular contributor to
this site, will be travelling with us this year.
We have seen some changes over the years but at
a slow rate and not detrimental to the island. Stuart has sung the
praises of all my favourite haunts, but I would like to recommend
hiring a 4 track vehicle and venturing off the island ring road
and into the mountains. It's 10 mph (20max) for hours to travel
relatively small distances but the views are magnificent eagles
are flying, wild tortoises are crawling and of course snakes and
lizards.
So roll on June 1st --Manolis, get those cold beers
ready and if anyone see's 4 wrinklies playing boulles on the beach
you will know who it is.
P.S. Alex -- re the snow photograph's, which one
is you and which one is the snowman?"
From Maxine Cuthbertson, Cheshire
22 May 2003 - "Returned fronm Thassos on
the 18th May 2003 never been before, fell in love with it, stayed
in Skala Potamia, scenery breathtaking. Stayed in Simeli appartments
1min from the sea. Beaches are beautiful, people so friendly,
food and drink cheap. Resturants and bars excellent. Recomend
CJ'S for coffee and stir frys, wow!!! Thommai taverna beach bar,
excellent very friendly, and the funky orange bar on the beach
for great company funky music, and kindness, we had lots of free
drinks, even gave us a bottle of wine to take home!!! why cant
bars be that good back home???? i love Thassos can see it being
a yearly holiday, excellent."
From Sophie Greenwood, London, England
12 May 2003 - "We have just come back from
Thassos and can recommened a few things. Firstly we think it is
worthwhile hiring a car for a few days. You get to see some wonderful
sites, especially along the coastal roads. Secondly Moyses Fish
Taverna in Thassos is a MUST. It serves great food, the view is
fantastic and the prices unbeatable.Thirdly take a trip to Aliki
beach, it is really beautiful and very peaceful. Finally try and
take the hydrofoil to Kavala if you want experience realistic if
rather gritty Greek life."
From barry wartnaby, hampshire
12 May 2003 - "stayed at the konstantinos
apartments last september very impressed with it.the kids thoroughly
enjoyed it,me and the missus had such a good time with the laid
back attitude, food and of course the beer(amstel) we ve booked
up for 2 weeks in middle of september. this time were going to
hire a car for a few days. can t wait"
From Julie and Adrian Nash, Essex, England
10 May 2003 - "We too had visited many Greek
islands before finding Thassos in 1999, but for us this island always
feels special. If I say all the usual things, like wonderful scenery
and beaches, great food and the most friendly people we have ever
met, I could be talking about so many places in Greece; yet there
is certainly an indefinable "something" about Thassos that makes
it a magical place. If, like us you become hooked you won't be able
to stay away.
Every time the media features articles on Greece,
Thassos remains overlooked, thankfully, so maybe it doesn't have
mass appeal. I have a feeling that you don't choose Thassos however;
Thassos chooses you!
We stay in Limenaria down on Trypiti beach. We
love to travel around however and like so many others on this site
love eating at Vigli on Golden Beach (Yes, this is the one up the
steps) other favourites are Mouragios in Limenaris and the Doukas
in Limenas near the little garden slightly left of the ferry port.
Doesn't look much but foods great and cheap and the guys are so
friendly. Theres also the Posiedon on Trypiti beach, our local taverna,
which is great for lunch.
Our hosts at Rodon House have become friends- its
not a sophisticated or upmarket joint though, just perfectly placed
on the beach with a little pool, bar and restaurant where Tomasso
will cook for you if there's demand. If you're stressed sad or otherwise
in need of a holiday in the true sense, go! You won't be disappointed.
p.s. Don't let the ferry croosing put you off.
Its lovely. And if you have to wait for the ferry in Keramoti, den
parazi, just buy a couple of bottles of Mythos at the pretty little
harbour and chill - it'll get your trip off to a lovely start!" |
