From sarah cook, thassos, greece

09 Jun 2004 - "I am from west yorks, but now i run a bar in scala potamia, COASTERS, with my greek partner, Stelios. Something needs to be done about the tourism here, the local people are really struggling to make a living. For some reason, Thompsons are telling people everything is full when they try to book, Libra cancelled this year, and golden sun have reduced the number of appartments available. Many appartments are empty for these reasons. There are not enough plane seats available, more planes should be chartered, and people could then book appartments independantly. e.g. Nama appartments (previously libra) now only runs through the internet, and has it's own site.

Scala Potamia is a beautiful resort, with many more bars and restaurants than previous years, but unfortunatly the brochures have not been updated since 1994, so people think there is nothing here. The area would also be of interest to ramblers and climbers as there is a good mountain range behind the resort.

Last but not least, don't ask your rep where to go, as they only work for specific places (the reason is quite obvious) it's my third year running the bar and i've yet to see one set foot in the place! (even though most of them are newcomers every year) Just try places for yourself, and find your own favorites.

If you try Thassos you will not regret it anyway!"

From Dawn and Paul, Birmingham, England

08 Jun 2004 - "Returned from Potos on 30th May after two not so long weeks. We stayed in the Alexandera beach which was a great hotel. After lazy days in the sun, we spent most evenings at BOOMERANG, the best place in town, great cocktails and fantastic hospitality is provided by Alex ,Joe and Abe who will quite happily spend the night chatting at the bar whislt they pour you yet another drink!!

We hired a car from Hermes in Potos and saw some fantastic places, our favourites being Aliki and Golden sands. The mountain village of Panagia is well worth a visit too. with so many things to see in such a short space of time , you have no choice but to return again.

We fell in love with the island and the laid back way of life . . . . . . can,t wait to go back."

From Alan Rowe & Janet Ackford, Devon, England

03 Jun 2004 - "Just got back yesterday from another gorgeous week on Thassos. I have been going to Thassos for 20 years now and have made some great friends on the island (spent 4 full summers on the island)

Living in Devon Gatwick/Manchester are a pain to get to, so this Year we decided to fly from Bristol to Thessaloniki and hire a car from the airport and drive to Keramoti to catch the ferry. The car hire we did over the internet and cost £125 for the week with full insurance. The drive from Thessaloniki takes 3 hours and once you are outside the city there is very little traffic. The ferry for 2 people plus a car costs 12.30 euros one way which is great value.

Stayed in Thassos town renting a room for 22 euros a night. The weather was excellent a bit chilly in the evenings but just the right temp for the beaches during the day.

Spent great days down at Paradise beach were you could body surf the waves were that good, other good beaches to visit are Trypiti, Metalia, Aliki (gets very busy @ weekends) Golden Beach is still beautiful but they are building at an alarming rate down there and I wonder if they will overdo it, still nice down by the campsite.

The food on Thassos has improved beyond recognition from when I was a rep for Young World back in 1984 (Tacky 18/30's that used to go there) The best Tavernas in Limenas are Moyses, Takis, Bergina, Zodiac for steaks, and Pigi.

After all these years I still love the place, if you want a relaxing friendly island with great beaches, food, company and nature then Thassos could be the place for you."

From chris white, wigan, England

02 Jun 2004 - "Me and a friend Si returned from Thassos on wed 26th May. Stayed at Athrion studios in Skala Pot (with Golden Sun,Hi Sarah). weather was great, food was great. Big hello to those Thomas Cook reps, you know who you are !. and hello to sylvia at the Emerald Bar. Thanks for the cheese and ham toastie. Mark will bring your curtains in August !."

From Steve, Worcs, England

30 May 2004 - "You are probably already aware but just to inform visitors who use your site I have spotted today www.thassos-forum.com have got a web cam up and running from property in Potos.. Very interesting to see weather etc and long shot of sea.Hopefully this will be the first of many."

From Deb and John, Ipswich, Suffolk, UK

29 May 2004 - "We have been back from Golden Beach for 2 weeks now and cant stop thinking about it. Definatley the best holiday we have had. what an island !. The food was fantastic, the people were lovley and the scenery breathtaking. Would recommend Psili Amos beach and the Koala Bar at Aliki."

From geraldine, south yorkshire, UK

24 May 2004 - " I also recommend the Toxotis mentioned by Harry. Have been to Thassos 8 times now & tried various tavernas but return to Toxotis most nights now. Cannot wait to return in September. Had fried courgettes for lungh last week in the taverna on Pahis beach. Very light, look like crisps in batter & served with tzatziki. Yum!

From Harry Griffett, Cornwall, UK

21 May 2004 - "Second visit to Thassos, stayed at the "George" had problems with a "person" who wanted 10 star accommodation for 1 star payment. Try "Posh Spice" Fish and Chips / Indian Cuisine, Cassy and Brian, we got a very pleasant suprise re. standard of food, also the "Toxotes". Go down to the old harbour and visit 'Souli at "Remezo", our favorite watering hole. Looking forward to 2005 already."

From Peter & Brenda Butler, Manchester, UK

20 May 2004 - "We have been on holiday 8 years in Thassos on the run, sounds boring we know but we can't get enough of the place. We always travel with Kosmar holidays who are realy superb. The studios we normally stay at are called Tarasans which is located directly on the beach. But as we are getting a little older we found it a bit lively last year 2003. The studio's are small and basic but very clean c/w air conditioning and a safe box and the owner's and staff are lovely. This year 2004 we have gone for the Antigone studio's which is just to the back of Thassos town We have been round and had a look and they look wonderfull and the owners are so friendly. So if you decide you should go have wonderfull time."

From Bev & Trev Haffenden, Middlesex, UK

18 May 2004 - "We have just returned from our first holiday in Thassos (with Thompson). What a wounderful place. We stayed at the Alexandra Beach Hotel in Potos, wasn't the best hotel we've stayed in, and the food wasn't great, advertised facilities were not ready to use, but the pool was great and at least the pool bar was open!

We hired a jeep with Europcar, well worth it the island is beautiful, loads of sandy beaches with hardly anyone on them, our favorite beaches we're tripti, matelica, and potos. we drove up the the town of kastro, and tried very hard to get to the peak, without success as some road and fallen away, but we were told that there are many other routes.

When we didn't eat at the hotel troff, we ate at Irene tavern in potos, and drank all of the time at the Boomerang cafe bar:- they do a fantastic English breakfast, and other food too! the drinks are plentyful and the owners Abe and Joe, and their dad Alex, are very welcoming, and you are sure to have a very good time, staying sobber can be hard. Sitting at the bar guarrantees that you will not be leave at the end of the night walking in a straight line!! thank you Abe, joe & Alex for the very good nights we had with you."

From Greg Fitzgerald, United States

15 May 2004 - " I walked around Thasos about 18 years ago. I loved it. My wife was pregnant and I was stationed in Drama with the US military. The day after we walked around the Island, our daughter was born the next day. I loved the little town that we lived in. It was great.

Just wanted to share with you.
Greg"

From Lorraine Paul and Ashley, Essex, UK

14 May 2004 - "Paul and I discovered Thassos quite by accident in May 2003 and what a beautiful place for a holiday. We have just returned from another week this year when we took Pauls 9 year old son Ashley with us. We stayed at the Aliston Studios in Skala Potamias which are beautiful and absolutely spotless. Many thanks to the owner Thannasis (hope spelling is right) who was especially good with Ashley - even letting him experiment with his laptop computer! All reataurants serve delicious food but would recommend Krambousa and Atilya. Fantastic scenery, friendly people, wonderful beaches, good food - what more can you ask."

From jean lovell, west sussex, UK

14 May 2004 - " I have just returned from scala potamias we hired out jeep from Potos Cars in the resort I can recommend this company as the service I received from Pauline was second to none and we found that the cars were in tip top condition and maintained to a very high standard by Martin. I can recommend this couple to everyone."

From R & JL, London, UK

13 May 2004 - "This was out first visit to Thassos and we are so happy we chose this as our destination. We were after some sun, scenery, relaxation and good food. We found all four of these in abudnance on the island. The scenery was epic, to say the least and the food delicious at every taverna.

We hired a car from the very friend Potas car hire in Skala Potamia who provided us with an excellent service which was both safe and reliable.

The Blue Bay hotel on the hillside overlooking Golden Beach provided us with a breathtaking view of the bay over breakfast, which was always served with a smile every morning.

And of course, what of the night time? A new bar at the foot of Blue Bay Hotel/Golden Beach, the Star Fish Bar became our local. Run by a friendly young couple who kept the Ursus Vodka shots coming in rustic surroundings with good music playing all night long. Both the hotel & the bar special ensuring Thassos has won a special place in our hearts. I look forward to returning one day."

From Nicki & Sean Jinks, Hertfordshire, England

12 May 2004 - "My husband and I have just returned from a weeks break in Thassos. It is a very peaceful and scenic island with many hidden beaches. The weather was great, the people were friendly. We stayed in Potos and the 2 places I would like to recommend are the Boomerang bar run by Joe, Abe and Alex, they are really friendly and serve great cocktails, we had many a good evening there. There is also a great restaurant in Potos called Zoom if you want fantastic greek food, large portions and value for money this is the best place."

From Joan Gill, Leicestershire, England

09 May 2004 - "Just returned home this evening after spending a fabulous week on the island of Thassos. Words seem inadequate as there are so many things to describe but I don't think I can type for that long tonight. It was our (my husband and I) first visit to the island and I guarantee that it will not be our last. Aliki was astounding and the dramatic marble quarries which reach right down to the sea were breath-taking and wonderful photo opportunities...the wild tortoises we encountered whilst visiting Kavala...the bee hives everywhere, all of the sights were fabulous. The lush green hills and mountainsides were a treat for our eyes and we loved the winding roads snaking through the greenery...the amazing beaches and the friendliness of the locals added up to make it a truly unforgettable holiday experience. Last but not least thanks to the various restaurants along Golden Beach for there delicious offerings....Greek Magic at it's best!!"

From jean lovell, west sussex, England

06 May 2004 - "we come to Thassos twice every year and have done so for the last 10 years, just to say you must visit probably the only and definitly the best indian restuarant on the island at Scala Potamia right on the corner by the taxi rank if you go any further down you will be in the sea The food is excellent.(Bar Flor International)"

From chris white, wigan, England

05 May 2004 - "I went to skala Pot in 2002 with my friend simon. we stayed at Nama apartments. excellent. Big up Sylvia in panagia !."

From phil watson, cheshire, England

30 Apr 2004 - "Went to thassos for first time in september 03,stayed at the vangelis studios would not recomend them very small and very basic for the money.
Apart from that one of the most relaxing and enjoyable holidays ive ever had,the people are friendly and the island is fantastic, cant wait to get back there in june"

From nicola and kitch, manchester, England

19 Apr 2004 - "we went to thassos for the first time in october 03, staying at the lovely nama apartments in skala potamias. despite it being the end of the season we had a wonderful time and were made to feel so welcome by everyone we met. particular thanks have to go to dave from dave's bar at golden beach who went out of his way to make our time there really special. we hope that everything is going ok after his return to the uk and hope to see him again when we return to thassos this year. don't know when yet, but looking forward to it already!"

From Margararet & Tony Kent-Francis, Cheshire, England

8 Apr 2004 - "We are returning to Susy's Studios in Scala Potamia (Thompsons) for the 4th time in 6 years on the 2nd of May, lovely island and people. KRAMBOUSCA run by two brothers is a super place to eat. We find taxi's very cheap and good. May is a good month there, 2 weeks in Scala on Kefalonia in September/October to follow rounds of the year nicely."

From the France family, Shropshire, England

5 Apr 2004 - "We too stayed at Antigone studios in Thassos town and like others you just have to go back. We visited in 2003 and tried to book again for 2004 but was not able to get in. However we have booked for 2005 today. Beware though cos the spotless rooms go fast. Hospitality is fantastic - have never known anything like it. Should not really be sayin all this cos some things are best kept quiet!!! Antigone stays in touch even sending xmas cards."

From Jai Ram & Katherine Gangotra, Nottingham, England

5 Apr 2004 - "Thassos is a wonderful place, food is great The people are very friendly especially to families with small children or babies. We have son who is 3 years old we took him when he was just 3 months old. Its our fourth visit this year. We are travelling 2nd June 2004 to 26 June 2004 and staying @ Emerald Apts in Golden Beach. Is there anyone else who is staying there or want to make friends?"

From Sandra Ashton, Berkshire, England

11 Mar 2004 - "I have spent the HAPPIEST years at Scala Potamias what a wonderful place peace, good food, good company, great fiends, sadley my husband died last year 2003 if anyone is going near to Possidonia Apts please give my love to Billy and Martina and say Sandra Ashton sends them and Skala her Love and she misses them XX"

From carl & jenny mumby, lincolnshire, England

5 Mar 2004 - "we have been to skala potamia for the past 4 years and each time we go we still find it an ideal place to relax and enjoy the scenery. Souzzana apts. are 5***** and every one that we speak to says the same. The best places that we have found are as follows Taverna PHILLIPI & KRAMBOUSCA for the best evening meals The PASTRY SHop at the center where you catch the bus toTHASSOS is highly recommended for all its cakes but do not be on a diet. We shall be there june 2 keep the rif raf out."

From Debbie & Lee, Devon, England

13 Jan 2004 - "My boyfriend and I had our 1st holiday together in September 2003. We stayed at the Green Sea Apartments in Skala Potamias and it was excellent. Neither of us had been to the island before but we would both very much like to return this year.

We hoped to return to the Green Sea, however, the brochure price (now that Thomas Cook have taken over) seems wildly expensive. I guess they know when they're onto a good thing!

Apart from the wonderful location of the Green Sea, the food there was superb. I'd thoroughly recommend it. Krambousa was also very good but Aprodite was rather disappointing. Thomai's Bar is also well worth a visit.

To everyone returning to or discovering Thassos for the first time, have a good one!"

From Pat Moran, Wiltshire, England

10 Jan 2004 - "After a superb holiday at the Souzana Studios in Scala Potamias in 2003 we have managed to book again for 2004. It looks like we will be there at the same time as Elizabeth and Barbara (remember Pat and Nat?) We are looking forward to eating in Alex's Restaurant (Megas Alexandros) and have 'chef's lamb' you must try it!! they also do the best Tzatziki in town!"

From Elizabeth Bellingham, Wolverhampton, England

9 Jan 2004 - "At last! Yes we've also managed to book the Souzanna studios for this year, but couldn't get in until 2nd June. Golden Sun really dragged their feet over this year's bookings, I've only just managed to get the brochure.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting back there, I've been keeping in touch with Sarah and Stelios (from Coasters Bar) It's a bit wet there at the moment - for a change!

Glad to see that so many of you enjoyed your stay in Thassos and are going back again."

From jackie & cliff smith, staffordshire, England

7 Jan 2004 - "We stayed at Sousanna studios at Scala Potamia for two weeks in June with four friends, we had a fantastic holiday. Highly recommend the accomodation, location etc. Alex the owner and his family very friendly, we sat talking until the early hours in the bar. Tassos the bar manager was great, he organised and served us an evening meal on two occasions at the studios. Alex's parents cooked the food and brought it to the accomodation, it was like being in your own villa.

The resort has many restaurants and the studios are close to Golden Beach if you want a change.

I would recommend car hire as the island is beautiful, my husband said 'I would be okay to drive!!' as they were so quiet. Two of our friends returned to Scala in August although Sousanna was fully booked they syaed nearby at the makarana which they reported as also being excellent. My father and his partner went in August they stayed at the sousanna and they also thought it was brilliant.

Scala caters for families and the older more mature guests as it is flat This year we have booked to go to Stoupa, but we will return to Thassos possibly next year, so to those of you who have booked to Sousanna happy holidays and give a big hug to Alex and Tassos if he is still there."

From carol & roy, bolton lancs, England

4 Jan 2004 - "this is a message for shiela & john from london, who have booked the suzzana in scala potimia just to let you know these are brand new appartments only be open 12 months the owner alex is wonderful also he owns one of the best tavernas (mega alexandros) the appartments are great swimming pool bar air conditioning hair dryer tv saftey deposit box (although not really needed) the bar is run by Tasoss (hope that is the correct spelling) he will kill me if it is'nt we booked June 2004 do not have any worries about staying here you could not find a more welcoming place to stay.hope you enjoy yourselves and have a lovely holiday this will be our 7th time on the island so i think you can say we love it."

From Kim Tyreman, Gloucester, England

1 Jan 2004 - "At last we have managed to book our Thassos 2004 holiday. We have been unable to book an apartment but have booked three studios at the Suzanna Studios in Scala Potomias instead. Although we haven't actually stayed at them, we can confirm that these are very nice studios and are off the middle road, approx mid way between Scala Potomias and Golden Beach, and approx 200m from the beach. There are a couple of tavernas and bars within a few minutes walk, but Alex who owns the Studios also runs an excellent taverna on the beach front in Scala Potomias itself! Alex, his family and friends will do eveything possible to make you feel welcome and to help you to enjoy your holiday. We were a little dubious about booking with Golden Sun as we haven't had the best of experiences with them in the past, but as we couldn't get an apartment we were keen to book the Suzanna Studios. This will be our third year running to Thassos and are now counting down the days to July :o)"

From Sheila & John, London, England

31 Dec 2003 - "Just booked our 3rd holiday to Thassos - this time to Souzana Studios, Skala Potamia, with Golden Sun - they look really nice . . . . . . check the brochure - prices are unbelievable although flight times not great and on a Wednesday rather than Thursday as previously - fingers crossed that all will be OK! Very little accommodation being offered at 2 weeks for the price of 1 this year though. Looking forward to exploring this part of the island, having stayed in Potos and Thassos Town previously - any info. on Souzana would be nice - guess it is roughly halfway between Skala P and Golden Beach - if so, that would be great."

From Kim Tyreman & Family, Gloucester, England

30 Dec 2003 - "We can confirm that the Green Sea Studios are now in the Thomas Cook third edition brochure . . . . . . unfortunately for us they are no longer doing the family apartments (they had two 1 bedroomed apartments when we stayed there last year!) So as yet we have still been unable to book our holiday to Scala Potamias. The travel Agents were able to offer us one holiday but it was above a car rental on the crossroads, and although not "too fussy" we decided against it. We have seen the Golden Sun "Greece, Cyprus, Portugal and Croatia" brochure for 2004, and although not much for Scala Potomias, (4 pages for the whole of Thassos,)we were pleased to see that Alex's "Suzanna Studios" are now in there :o)."

From Mick & Tracey, Wakefield, Yorkshire

22 Dec 2003 - "We booked with Manos travel this year & flew from Manchester at 3.30 on the Wednesday afternoon. It was 11pm (Greek time) before we arrived at our digs, and they were only 5 mins from the ferryport. The worst thing was having to leave early to come home (7.45 from the apartments) effectively losing a days holiday. I was hoping Golden Sun was going to be different. Ah well!"

From Peter, Lancashire, England

3 Dec 2003 - "Goldensun are taking bookings (at last)! I've just sorted mine out, and it is actually slightly cheaper than last year!! Flight times are a bit odd though, from Manchester - 3.30 in the afternoon. A bit of a change from the last 4 years (6a.m.) Hopefully, there will be no delays, otherwise we will have a problem with the ferries."

From mary, kent, UK

27 Nov 2003 - "Golden Sun have just about finished loading all the Thassos Holidays for 2004, The prices are good, The brochures not quite ready yet but your local Independant travel agent can book already without the brochure if you know what you want!! Kastro studios are now Castle I believe. Down side is the flights with excelair about 3 hours later than this year, not sure how that will work with ferries, presume they will charter their own perhaps. Hope this helps."

From Kim Tyreman, Gloucester, England

26 Nov 2003 - "As yet we still have been unable to book our holiday to Thassos for next year. Our problem being that we wish to stay in Scala Potamias in a family apartment suitable for two adults with two children also with a studio for my parents. We are still waiting with eager anticipation for the Golden Sun Brochure and the next edition of the Thomas Cook one. However I have received the following in an e-mail from Trudy at Thomas Cook "Thank you for your email. I have checked with Thomas Cook regarding the Green Sea Apartments and as you have already suggested they are not currently including them in the Summer 2004 brochures and do not know if they will have them in any future additions." Which isn't good news for us!"

From Sue & Paul Line, Leicestershire, UK

21 Nov 2003 - "We have just found this site and wanted to add our comments that we had the best holiday in Europe we have ever had at The Anna in Limenaria at the beginning of July 2003. We could not fault anything - the travelling, the accommodation, the food, the people, and the weather. Just wonderful - so much so that we have already booked for The Anna Beach (so we can be nearer the sea) for July 2004 and cannot wait!"

From mary, kent, England

11 Nov 2003 - "Hi, have just found this site again after losing off my favourites! green sea apartments will probably be with Thomas Cook for 2004. I am meeting Golden Sun reps on monday at a travel agents bash so hopefully i can post an up to date on their progress, even we dont know what they are up to! our reservation system has only 1 lot of accom. for 2004 and we just know they have more dont we!!!! Hope this is of use. Went to Thassos first time in September and loved it but lets keep it quiet!!!!!!!!!"

From Michael & Christine Morton, Lancashire, England

10 Nov 2003 - "We have been travelling to Thasos staying in Scala Potamias for eight years and find it to be the most friendly place on earth!

We have made many friends there and this year stayed at the Green Sea Studios with Panos and his family who are ever present and ensure that you have a heaven-sent holiday. We, like most of the people who have written to this site go to Cafe Thomai for drinks and snacks - the pizzas are wonderful and the Mythos so cold! The Captain's Taverna has been a great favourite for years and is, perhaps, only surpassed by the quality, and quantity of authentic Greek food served up at Green Sea's own taverna.

The only problem for us is that for 2004 there is little availability on Thasos from any tour operator and we cannot find our wonderful Green Sea Studios in any brochure."

From Steve, Bromsgrove, Worcs, England

9 Nov 2003 - "To all prospective visitors to Thassos - Be careful regarding vehicle hire. You may think your getting a bargain but watch the small print. I visited thassos late Sept and early Oct. I rented a car for one day from two companies.

I recommend Potos Car Rental . They explain the laws of Thassos. EG there are not always double yellow lines to worry about but signs on Posts.Their invoice also details insurance. Pauline at skala Potamia provided excellent advice If you decide to take a cheaper company take a closer check on their excesses and personal injury cover. You may find your in trouble if you do have an accident.

Thassos however is the best Island to visit. Easy driving and Skala Potamia my favourite place.

Recommendations - Restaurants, Skala Potamias : Evening Meals - Nautilos: Breakfast - PHILLIPI: SNACKS Pizza -THOMAI: DRINK . FOOTBALL - ERIC'S. and ZORBAS - I went there for my big 50 in September. They made me very welcome. Great live music. Good at week end. Lot of local people use this also for special occasions. Its great to see the local people dance and enjoy themselves. The Manager is also a great entertainer and provided a fantastic demonstation of Greek dancing with a staff member. A bit dearer than other restaurants but well worth it."
