My husband and I have just returned from
spending two weeks at Golden Beach in Thassos. We stayed at
the Dionysus Hotel which I do believe was one of the best
Hotels in Golden Beach, the view was literally out of this
world. When we arrived, we went out onto our balcony and it
was stunning, totally peaceful, all we could hear was a nightingale.
There is a bit of a hill to climb which actually isnt too
bad. They do run a minibus back from the beach 3 times a day,
which is good when you have all your beach stuff.
The hotel had extra little things that really
made a difference e.g. fridge, fan and one of the best things
was the mosquito screens on the door and loo window. I had
read quite a lot of the comments people had said from last
year, which was the problem with Mosquitos (so we had bought
a net!) but we did not have any problems at all (we did spray
liberally though). But we do know that other people had major
problems. The young woman that worked at Dave's Bar got 100
bites one night and had to spend the following day in bed
as she felt so ill. We tended to eat early though, so we were
usually at the bar in the Hotel at about 11pm.
We mainly ate at either Vigli or Fedra in
the evening. We got a 10% discount at Vigli (as it is associated
with Dionysus Hotel). Food there was excellent. Fedra was
also very good but the service was diabolical!!
The beach at Golden Beach was good. The week
before we arrived there had been quite a lot of rain, so the
temperature was great when we arrived. When we went down to
the beach there were jelly fish everywhere which was rather
off putting. We spoke to the Thomson Rep, Katie, who said
that they were the non stinging variety. The only ones you
need to worry about were the ones with purple veins (which
we saw two). They did clear up over the week though and by
the time we left we only saw the odd one or two. It was quite
shallow in some places and deep in other places. The only
down side was the amount of cigarette butts in the sand (I
smoke but I pick mine up)so I wish other people would do so
as well, we often saw other english couples leaving empty
coke bottles etc when they left which was also not very thoughtful.
If you want a relaxing holiday with not much
going on then this is the ideal holiday. It was just what
we wanted as we hadnt had a holiday for 3 years. We will definately
go again and to the same hotel but would probably hire a car
for a couple of days. We were told you can drive right around
the island in approx 2 hours.
We were a bit concerned about the transfer
time, but it was about 20 minutes from the airport to the
port, 35 mins by ferry (which was a nice break actually) and
then 20 minutes the other side. It was far nicer than spending
and hour and a half on a coach. All in all we would recommend
it highly.
