We will be visiting Thassos this year for
the fifth time in the last six years. We stay in Skala Potamia
at the Hotel Aloe which is excellent. It's back up the hill
from the main beach (about a 3 minute walk)and all the rooms
have a glorious view of the bay, which I think is one of the
most beautiful views anywhere in the world. The hotel is very
clean and well maintained. Aris and Maria who run the hotel
are very friendly and helpful - but then on Thassos who isn't?
True Skala Potamia isn't a particularly lively
resort but it does boast some excellent tavernas. The best
by far is Krambousa where the food is superb - try the Thassian
chicken - and the welcome is always warm. It's open all year
round, so if it's good enough for the locals . . . . say no
more. We also frequent the taverna M Alexandros which is run
by Alex, his mum and dad and his brother (when he's not in
the army!). It has an extensive menu to suit all tastes. Their
tzatziki is freshly made by Alex's mum and you will not taste
any better.
I would also recommend Akrogiali which is
a small taverna situated on the beach on the way towards Golden
Beach. It is quite distinctive with its blue painted chairs.
Manolos the owner is great and cannot do enough for you. The
food is good, especially the fish, and he has a nice twist
to the traditional serving of bread - it's toasted and spread
with olive oil and herbs. Also try his local wines from the
barrel. The white has a slight taste of retsina but don't
be put off - it's delicious, and the red is very fruity.
Also worth a mention is the Votsalo snack
bar run by a lady called Smarro. She does a great English
breakfast and being right on the beach it's really handy to
wander up to for a snack and a beer at lunchtime. It's right
next to the Cronos bar, which is run by her husband Vasilis.
This is very popular because he has a big screen TV and shows
all the major sporting events and he also has an excellent
selection of music on record and CD to enjoy when you're sipping
your after dinner cocktails.
We found a great taverna in Thassos Town
(Limenas) last year called MOYSES (pronounced Mousses). Seek
it out. The food is excellent and plentiful, the service is
great, the waiters are great fun and there are regular bouzouki
nights. It faces the sea and my wife was entranced by the
glorious sunsets. Consequently it is very popular, so don't
be surprised if you have to wait for a table, but don't give
up - it's well worth it.
Do I sound enthusiastic about Thassos? You
bet. I just can't wait until we're back there again on 21
May.
