Last year (August 2006) was our third holiday to Thassos. We have always stayed in the beatiful resort of Golden Beach. The first year at The Emerald, which I have to say were basic but the views were absolutely fantastic and very friendly owners and the second year we stayed at The Marina which we loved as they were close to our favourite part of the beach although, were dissapointed to see that on our third visit the addition of a pool bar opposite had made the appartments a bit rowdy ( this may be due to a very large unruly family staying there at the time). Last year we were due to stay at The Nostos Apartments with Thomson however, as they reduced the accommodation they were willing to offer Thomson we found ourselves with nowhere to stay just two weeks before departure.

After contacting some people we knew locally we managed to secure an apartment at a reasonable price, however it took a great deal of negotiation with Thomson to persuade them to offer us the flight at a reduced rate. Originally they wanted more for the flight only than the package. We eventually got the flight for the bargain price of £950!!! for three of us at the end of August. With the cost of accommodation so cheap independantly we finally did manage to secure the holiday for the original cost of our package. We stayed at the Liberty Apartments in Golden Beach and I must say that this was the best accommodation we have ever stayed in there. For a price of under £400 for two weeks we had a brand new apartment with a fantastic balcony, air conditioning included and if we had booked the BA flights far enough in advance we could have got there far more cheaply than the cost of a package. The Liberty Apartments come very highly recommended and Stelios and his family are very friendly and make you very welcome (there English may be limited but we managed to communicate and have a good laugh with them). My holiday dreams are always to go back to Golden Beach in Thassos - we just love it - and we would now hate to stay at any other place than the Liberty apartments and would consider travelling independantly via BA.

Unfortunately a planned move to New Zealand meant that last year was possibly our last visit to Thassos - and I have to say it ended on a high note. Eating out in Golden Beach our favourite has to be Sotiros - what a wonderful setting by the snads with the waves lapping the shore - wonderful service and excellent food. We also like Playa D'Ora - opposite the campsite - they serve fantatic steaks and great pizzas. Another favourite is Ta Pefka - a lovely restaurant situated beneath the trees. We have eaten in other resorts during our stay but the quality was not as good and was so much more expensive. There is a taverna we particularly like in Thassos town called Moyses. It is at the very end of the new harbour - past where the ferries depart - and is easy to miss as it is way past the ferry terminals. The food and service is good - and don't forget the camera as the sunsets are to die for.

We love Panagia which has a beatiful water feature sculpted out of the town, altough it is very touristy. The whole island is wonderful to explore with very many beautiful greek villages.

If you go you won't be dissapointed. We are very much lovers of the greek islands and always said we would never visit the same island twice. Thassos broke that promise and I know if we were to stay in England we would continue to go there for many years. And if you haven't been before get your essentials from Supermarket Anna at Golden Beach - she is very friendly and will become a long term friend - we did not manage to explain to her that last year may be our last visit due to the language barrier - she loves our little boy and absolutely spoils him and looks forward to his return each year.

So if you have not been beore give Thassos a try you won't be disappointed. If you have been before consider Golden Beach and the fantastic tavernas not forgetting the outstanding accommodation offered at The Liberty Appartments.
