If you are looking to find unspoilt Greece you can’t go wrong with Thassos. Although you should check the rainfall in May as a heavy rain washes away most of the wasp eggs - a little local knowledge goes a long way. (Saying that don't be put off as it is the most beautiful Island).

Thassos Island is absolutely beautiful with its unspoilt sandy coastline made up of numerous tiny bays and long stretches of gently sloping beaches, as busy or remote as you please, most of which are served with a taverna. If you choose Golden Beach or Skala Potamia then you have made a great choice for a relaxing resort and a great base from which to explore the rest of the island, between them they hold a good selection of beech front bars, tavernas and restaurants. Our stay in Golden Beech was the most relaxing holiday we have ever had. It was a real shame to have to come home. Don’t forget to pay a visit to Eric’s Bar, have a dip in the heated pool, a family run place with a great atmosphere, and good food and drink. You may even see Eric Cantona if you are lucky (you’ll see what I mean).

For car hire go and see Sue at POTOS car rental because I’m sure she will look after you as she did us. Car hire is strongly recommended and a day in a 4WD is a great way to seek out the more remote parts of the hilly terrain, you will be amazed at how unspoiled old Greece really is. You can also reach the highest point of Thassos which we are assured have incredible views (it was a touch on the cloudy side by the time we got up there) but the journey was well worth it. I strongly advise purchasing a good map as the mountain tracks are not signposted from the main costal road. If you get up there look us up in the book kept at the summit, the entry was on 5/10/2002 from Gin and Ian from Tunbridge Wells.

As for eating out, you really cannot beat the Symi fish restaurant in Thassos town. The menu is extensive but everything is freshly cooked and the prices are more than reasonable. You will not be disappointed !! If you are eating in the Golden Beach area, pay a visit to Finikas for good food and friendly service.

We had a brilliant holiday in Thassos. Hope you enjoy yourselves too!! We even got engaged out there.

We visited Thassos on 2 October 2002 and stayed at the Emerald Apartments in Golden Beach which was run by Costas. It was very clean with superb views of the bay and mountains. It has a pool and bar and Costas is a good host. You will certainly need a drink after walking the hill up to the apartments but it is well worth it
